India has three types of institutions that take care of destitute children: Special Adoption Agencies (SAAs) for children of ages 0-6 years, Child Care Institutions (CCIs) for children of ages 6-18 years, and After-Care Institutions (ACIs) for ages 18-21. The numbers of these institutions are however highly disproportionate and many of them lack the ability to provide for anything more than the very basic necessities. This adversely affects the children’s overall growth and consequently their reintegration into the mainstream when they leave the institutions. The Jena Committee Report in 2018 recorded that there were around 3.7 Lakh Children in Need of Care and Protection (CNCP) in India of which Maharashtra alone had around 57 thousand. Maharashtra also had the highest number of Children in Conflict with Law (CCL), i. e., juvenile criminal offenders. The report analyzed all the challenges facing Indian CCIs such as limited man-power, and financial concerns; reporting that around 70% of CCIs struggle to provide anything more than basic facilities. This resource crunch has created the need for social bodies such as Ankur Pratishthan to step in and bridge this gap in the system to ensure that no youths of our nation are denied their right to feel at home, fully develop, and serve our nation.
