Gift a Smile - Update 16

The End Of An Era - Goodbye 2023

Laughter and a healthy spirit of competition filled the air this weekend at E. Borges Memorial Hostel as all the residents—children, patients, and caretakers—took part in a game of Housie.

It was a fun time, with kids and adults learning a new game and trying to win prizes. I am also very grateful to my mum for helping me this time and calling out the numbers. I'd like to give a big thanks to all the members of the Gift a Smiles WhatsApp group; your donations made events like this possible. (Link provided below.)

As the year draws to an end, I reflect on all that I've achieved so far with Gift a Smile and hope to keep my New Year's resolution: to continue and expand Gift a Smile.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me from the start. See you on the other side!

A Commitment

It’s been a while since I’ve made a visit to the cancer hostel and I feel guilty for not keeping up with the commitment I made. Recently I was lost in the chaos of exams and submissions, afterall 11th grade is pretty time consuming.

But with the new year coming it’s time to make a resolution, this new year will see a me that works hard with discipline and makes sure to manage her time better so Gift a Smile does not take a back seat due to the chaos of daily life.

Gift a Smile - Update 15

A Task and A Surprise - Moments of Joy with kinder Joy

A few days back I got into the grind of school after a long Diwali break. I realised that I hadn't visited the kids at the hostel in a while. When I discussed this with my mum, generously offered to sponsor the next round of Gift a Smile. It wasn't anything big or grand, just some chocolate goodies. Yet, observing the smiles on their faces as I came to visit, you wouldn’t have thought so. They were just as delighted to see me as I was to see them, which made the occasion even more special.

Please keep an eye out for the December initiative

A Tribute To Heroes

"Not all heroes wear capes," a proverb that nearly everyone has heard at least once in their lives, is typically associated with videos portraying individuals doing something out of the norm—saving someone's life, displaying super strength, or performing extraordinary acts.

But today, I want to share the story of someone who has been a hero everyday of his life, to the extent that it has become his norm. It doesn’t involve possessing great physical strength or exceptional intelligence, yet upon hearing his story, no one can deny him his superhero badge.

Shri Madhukar B. Malshe, now 83 years old, has been associated with the TATA Foundation since his twenties, dedicating over 60 years to the memorial foundation. As a supervisor, he cares for the patients there as people, not merely as numbers on a spreadsheet.

While I don't have the fortune of knowing his personal story, one thing is clear: inspirational people are not solely those seen on screens, and they aren't merely defined by their achievements. Inspirational individuals are also the ones you encounter in daily life, always surprising you with their genuine care and compassion.

Individuals like Shri Madhukar B. Malshe often redefine what it means to be a hero, showing us that true heroism resides in dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
