National Domestic Workers' Movement The NDWM is a Movement and a NGO working for female domestic workers, Child Domestic Worker and migr NDWM was founded in 1985 by Dr. Sr.

Jeanne Devos, a Belgian Missionary. The organization works in 17 states of India and has a national presence. The movement works directly with over 10 million domestic workers impacting all domestic workers across the country. Dignity, Legal Protection and Empowerment of Domestic Workers are the key objectives of NDWM. In the 30 years that NDWM has been active, the organization has tackled major p

roblems like stigmatization of domestic workers, absence of legal protection, denial of right to organize etc. As an impact of working for dignity and empowerment of workers, they have obtained an identity and name: ‘domestic workers’, they are now taken seriously by decision making bodies such as labour ministries. The silence and invisibility of domestic workers is broken, Child Domestic work has been brought to the public’s attention. As a movement we have made all possible efforts to break the slavery forms of domestic work in India.

Before the Pandemic, domestic workers were already suffering from the labour and financial 'co-morbidities' of low wages, no overtime wages, or fixed working hours or provisions of leave and no social security. The pandemic dealt a further blow of loss of jobs and their sole source of income. On the eve of International Domestic workers' Day 2021, domestic workers express their sentiments and demands with the fervent hope that the Government would consider their demands .

On the occasion of the Anti Child Labour Day, 21 domestic workers’ children from different slums participated in the programme arranged at the Child Line – 1098 nodal office based at Indore School of Social Work vicinity. Director, Sr. Rosina; Animator, Ms. Francina Nelson and Ms. Anita Salvi, Domestic Worker & member of the Union accompanied the children to the Child Line Office. Children of domestic workers from Shanti Nagar, Aman Nagar, Saikripa Colony & Vaibhav Laxmi Nagar attended the programme. The Coordinator of Child Line, Mr. Brajesh Dhakad welcomed children and explained about Child Line Help in disaster and trouble. He explained about shelter and care for children who are lost or leave their home due to difficult situations. Child Line works to reunite the lost children to their parents.

We received acknowledgement letters from the Prime Minister of India's Office (PMO), New Delhi, Ministry of Women & Child Development and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for submitting the memorandum addressing the issues of domestic workers in India and the need for a comprehensive legislation for their social protection and labour rights. Here's hoping for a better tomorrow for the domestic workers in India!

The Advocacy event was jointly done by the NDWF & NDWM for a National Legislation for DWs from 11th to 13th April. We met the union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram , Lalitha Kumaramangalam Chairperson National Commission for Women , Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs, India, Shri Shashi Tharoor and others.
