Pehchan

Pehchan We use advocacy and empowerment to ensure the rights of homeless citizens while building their self-reliance at every step.

The urban homeless represent the poorest of the poor in urban society. They have to survive with only two of their basic human needs being met – Roti(food) and kapda (clothing), but no makan(shelter). Homeless people also called “Rough sleepers”, are noticeable all through the later part of the night in the city, sleeping on the roadside pavements, on dividers, above hand carts, on staircases of r

eligious places, under the bastions of closed shops, beneath overbridges, at railway platforms, on sea beaches and so on. However, this leads people to conjure up images of substance abusers, pick-pockets, thieves and unclean rowdies - an image which is not quite the truth. Simple things like finding a job, taking a shower are things we take for granted, but are genuine problems for homeless people. How does a homeless person go about getting a job? What address and phone number would they use as a contact? There are some homeless people who face mental illness issues, but they often fall through the cracks of the system and have a harder time accessing health care. They can be seen as scary and crazy, but a rich artist or movie star with mental health problems is often described as eccentric. Addictions are sometimes a problem as well with similar differences in attitudes between the rich and the poor. This group, due to its generally unclean outward appearance has difficulty in accessing basic facilities of health, shelter and protection. Most importantly they are an easy and vulnerable target for law enforcement agencies; their very existence being under threat with rampant violations of their constitutional, legal and human rights. Article 21 of our Indian Constitution grants its citizens right to life with dignity, but the conditions in which homeless are forced to live de-dignify a person and violate all his/ her rights.

MyMumbai Exhibition Showcases Unseen City Through the Lens of the Homeless
Mumbai: In a city as fast-paced as Mumbai, countless moments often go unnoticed. Bringing these “unseen and unique” perspectives to light, the “MyMumbai photo exhibition presented a remarkable collection of images captured by homeless citizens—many of whom had never held a camera before. Despite this, their photographs emerged as powerful, emotional expressions of life in the city, earning widespread appreciation.
Organized by the Pehchan Foundation , the exhibition was successfully held at the Mumbai Press Club. As part of this unique initiative, homeless individuals captured different facets of Mumbai through their own lens, offering a deeply personal and sensitive perspective of the city. A total of 945 pictures were captured by 35 homeless people using Fujifilm Quicksnap disposable cameras.
Inaugurated by Chief Guest, Mr. Ujjwal Uke (Retired IAS officer and Chairman of the State-Level Shelter Monitoring Committee, Maharashtra), also lauded the initiative. Reflecting on his college days and interest in photography, he described the effort by homeless participants to narrate their stories through images as truly inspiring. Senior journalist and RTI activist Anil Galgali along with BJP spokesperson thakur , attended the event as distinguished guests. They appreciated the impactful social work carried out by the foundation and stressed the importance of providing shelter and amplifying the voices of the homeless. Founder of the organization, Brijesh Arya, shared the inspiration behind the project and highlighted the success of similar exhibitions conducted over the past two years.
The event was also attended by several eminent personalities, including Prashant Nakwe, Bhalchandra Mungenkar, Arun Deo, Amarjit Mishra, Santosh Pandey, Udaypratap Singh, Sumiti Singh, Ravi Nair, Suraina Malhotra, Bhavana Jain, Nizamuddin Raeen, Teesta Setalvad, Ritu Dewan, Pramila Sharma, Deepnarayan Shukla, Sonal Khanolkar, Dheeraj Singh, Rajendra Aklekar, Raunak Kukde, Vijay Singh, Indrajeet Singh, Jamir Kazi, Bhagwati Mishra, Ankit Mishra, Dimple Cheda and many more.
Pehchan team Sarthak Banerjeepuri Banerjipuri, Subhash Rokde, Sarmila Dusuza, Meher Mehtani, Nidhi Prabhakar, Rachel, Samee, Yuvraj and Chandrakant ji were also widely appreciated. Notably, the participating homeless photographers transformed this exhibition into more than just a display of images; it became a powerful medium to express their identity, emotions, and struggles
The MyMumbai Photo exhibition stands as a testament to the fact that art does not depend on resources alone, but on perspective, sensitivity, and lived experiences offering a truly unique and heartfelt narrative of the city.
