Mumbai Rabies Elimination Project (MREP) – Phase 2 Inauguration 🐾
The Mumbai Animal Association (MAA) team was honoured to attend the inauguration of Phase 2 of the Mumbai Rabies Elimination Project at Byculla Zoo on the occasion of world rabies day.
The event was graced by BMC Mayor Smt. Ritu Tawde, AMC, DMC, Joint Director NCDC, Dr. Ingole (Mumbai Veterinary College), Dr. Pathan (GM, Deonar Abattoir), Dr. Andy Gibson (Founder & CEO of Mission Rabies and Director of Strategic Research), Dr. Ashwin (Mission Rabies In-charge, Mumbai Region), Dr. Sneha, Dr. Nisha, veterinary officials, BMC veterinarians, veterinary students, NGOs, and the BMC Dog Department team.
🐕 Phase 1: A Significant Step Forward
Through the collaborative efforts of BMC and Mission Rabies, a large number of dogs were vaccinated across Mumbai, contributing to rabies prevention and reducing rabies cases.
BMC recorded zero human rabies deaths in 2025, an important milestone in the city's rabies prevention efforts.
🤝 Phase 2: Working Towards 2030
The session highlighted scientific planning, mass vaccination, effective Animal Birth Control (ABC) strategies, and coordination among all stakeholders.
The Mayor, BMC General Manager, and veterinary officials shared productive strategies for strengthening ABC implementation and improving animal welfare.
MAA also had the opportunity to interact with representatives of YODA, Thank You Earth, WFA, All About Them, BAR, Shrimad Rajchandra Ahimsa Trust, WSD, Tata hospital,and several other animal welfare organisations.
