Apnalaya India

Apnalaya India Tackling Urban Poverty is complex. Currently our work is focused in Shivaji Nagar, M East Ward.
(1)

Apnalaya works with the urban poor - ENABLING access to basic services, healthcare, education and livelihoods; EMPOWERING them to help themselves; and ENSURING provision of civic entitlements through advocacy with the government. To effect change on the ground, through our three verticals Health & Disability, Education & Livelihoods and Citizenship & Advocacy, Apnalaya takes a multi-dimensional ap

proach, one where we work with Individuals, Communities and Government at various levels. INDIVIDUALSโ€“ Apnalaya helps individuals gain access to basic needs, necessary for survival, including basic services (such as water, electricity, sanitation), healthcare, education and opportunities for livelihood.

2. COMMUNITIES โ€“ Apnalaya empowers the community to help themselves, by imparting Civic Education, building a group of Community Volunteers, and organising people into Civic Action Groups to engage with municipal authorities on issues of common concern.

3. GOVERNMENT โ€“ Apnalaya advocates the key issues of the urban poor to Government, providing consultation and liaison, building the capacity of government functionaries, collaborating with like-minded organisations, and creating awareness via the media, for improved provision of civic amenities and services.

Government Schemes Supporting Women in Maharashtra

Various government initiatives aim to improve financial security, education access, and livelihood opportunities for women across Maharashtra.

These schemes provide benefits such as direct financial assistance, education incentives for girl children, entrepreneurship support for women-led startups, and social security pensions.

Creating awareness about such programmes is an important step in helping eligible beneficiaries access available support.

During the session, participants learned about:
- OPD services and free medicine distribution
- BP and diabetes screening
- Immunization services
- Tuberculosis (TB) awareness and DOTS methodology
- Maternal and child health services, including antenatal care, hemoglobin testing, newborn care, and family planning

The objective was to strengthen volunteersโ€™ understanding of public health services and empower them to act as a bridge between the community and the health system.

Such initiatives improve awareness, accessibility, and informed use of government healthcare services.
