Nearly half of a city’s population lives in informal settlements, yet access to chronic disease care remains out of reach.
Diabetes. Hypertension. Conditions that require lifelong care, often go untreated due to cost, access, and fragmented systems.
In this article, Jennifer Spencer, Consultant Qualitative Researcher at SNEHA, explores what it truly takes to deliver chronic disease care in urban informal settlements and why community-level action can no longer wait.

We thank India Development Review for providing a platform to bring these critical realities to light.

A rising burden of non-communicable diseases and vulnerabilities in accessing affordable and quality care point to the need for community-level action for fostering health equity in urban informal settings.

When resources are shared, opportunities are created for everyone to function at their full potential.

Through our partnership with ; it has enabled exactly that.

We at SNEHA are proud to be instruments of this collective effort.

Together, we are strengthening the health of those who matter most: our community and our frontline workers.

With Amazon’s support, we have distributed:

* 211 baby weighing machines
* 211 sun boards
* Flipbooks to 211 Sevikas and 168 ASHAs

This initiative will help us reach approximately 2500 mothers and 8500 children, 1600 volunteers and 400 govt. frontline workers, ensuring better monitoring, awareness, and care at the community level.

With improved IEC materials and essential equipment, ICDS Sevikas and ASHAs are now better equipped to manage growth monitoring, counsel families, and deliver critical health services more effectively.

Because when we strengthen systems together, we create healthier futures.

Call for Organisations: Integrating Health Systems and Violence Prevention in Kolkata & Howrah At SNEHA, our work has shown that violence against women and children is deeply linked to health, yet health systems remain underutilised in prevention and early response. A key part of our approach has been strengthening convergence through One Stop Centres (OSCs) - bringing together medical care, psychosocial support, legal aid, and protection services. When linked with community systems and frontline workers, these platforms can play a critical role in early identification and prevention of violence. Through the SNEHA Knowledge Center, we are convening a closed-door, in-person roundtable in Kolkata in May, bringing together organisations working on these issues. We are looking to engage with organisations that: 1. Are based in Kolkata and/or Howrah 2. Work on violence against women and children, child protection, public health, or community mobilisation 3. Have strong community-level experience 4. Are interested in integrating health and violence prevention approaches This roundtable will explore how health systems, community platforms, and One Stop Centres can function as convergent spaces for more effective prevention and response. One organisation will be supported to co-organise the roundtable in May.

If your organisation is interested in participating, please fill out the form below: 🔗 https://forms.gle/9AUGHqoqirBbgYSi6

SNEHA deeply cherishes its partnership with Amazon, whose support has strengthened the Sehat Project across the rural hinterlands of Bhiwandi.

Anganwadi centres transformed into vibrant learning spaces! Designed as IEC tools, these walls now reach ~ 2,000 pregnant and lactating women with vital nutrition and health messages - driving meaningful change through the SNEHA and Amazon partnership.

These are not just painted walls; they are collective learning hubs. Spaces where we communities will gather, engage and learn together, strengthening everyday health practices.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Amazon team for enabling this journey, bringing colour, knowledge, and shared learning community learning together.

Together, SNEHA and Amazon continue to move forward, ‘Raising Health for All’.

Some days in caregiving ask more of us than we realise. This day was about giving something back to ourselves. It was a day filled with laughter, mindfulness, appreciation, positive energy, and meaningful conversations. We returned not just as a team, but as people who felt seen, held, and gently reminded why we chose this work.

Together we grow. Together we heal. Together we thrive.

Because in palliative care, we walk with others through some of life’s hardest moments. And to keep walking beside them, we must sometimes pause… and care for ourselves too.
