Where are our open spaces going?

Residents of six housing societies in Parel–Bhoiwada have jointly filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court, alleging that a builder — with the support of officials from the BMC, SRA and state departments — is illegally encroaching on over 16,000 sq metres of land reserved for a playground and a civic school.

The land, clearly marked as Recreation Ground (RG) in both the 1991 and 2034 Development Plans, is now being dug up and built over. Residents say the developer has steadily increased the number of slum rehab tenements beyond the approved plan, using this as a pretext to grab more saleable area and shrink the mandated open space.

According to the petitioners, the RG— which must legally be at least 35% of the plot — is being reduced to just 8–9%, violating court orders and city planning rules. Despite multiple RTIs, legal notices, and a previous stay on construction, work has resumed.

Residents, united under the Parel-Bhoiwada Residents Federation, say this is a clear case of profiteering and collusion at the cost of public green space in a city already starved of it. They are determined to fight until the land is restored as playgrounds and open space for the community.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is under threat from the Draft Zonal Master Plan proposed by the BMC, which aims to open up eco-sensitive forest land for construction and “development.” If implemented, this plan could lead to displacement of Adivasi communities, destruction of wildlife habitats and irreversible loss of Mumbai’s last remaining forest cover.

Check link in stories and bio to object to this.

The Stakes: SGNP is Mumbai's last green lung with 1,300+ plant species, 274 bird species, and 54 leopards. The current 100m-4km buffer (already below recommended 10km) will be further compromised by development zones. 33% of buffer zone is already developed. More construction will complete the destruction. The plan also mislabels Adivasi settlements as "slums," paving way for forced removal.

The BMC has given citizens only 30 days (shoukd be y0 days!) to study and respond to this 400-page plan, with the deadline on Friday, October 17th. It will take 20 seconds to sign the petition by citizen groups working to protect our forests and our shared future. Let's do what we can and not be silent and complicit in the destruction of our forest land.

The document put up by the BMC is only in English, excluding local communities. There is no proper biodiversity mapping or vulnerability assessment. It violates basic conservation principles requiring intact buffer zones.

🌿 Jane Goodall (1934–2025)
She walked gently through forests, but her footsteps changed the world.

🌍 She didn’t just study nature — she listened to it. And then taught the world how to protect it.

Because a better world isn’t built by heroes.
It’s built by communities that care. 🌱

She showed us that every being matters, every life, every tree, every choice we make. Her legacy isn’t just in books or documentaries.
It’s in how we show up for the world around us.

So today, in her memory, ask yourself:
What can I do for the community beside me?
For the people and animals and plants with no voice?

Today, we honour her legacy not with silence, but with action.
Start small. Start local. Start now.
Plant a tree. Protect a stray. Mentor someone. Organise a clean-up. Speak up for the voiceless — human or not.

Because compassion, when practiced together, becomes unstoppable.

Thank you, Jane. We’ll carry the light forward. 🕊️🌍

What are Love Your Parks Days?

They are regular gatherings at your local park organised by the local community.

The idea is not to have a grand production but to have regular, small-scale, mini "events" as acts of solidarity, community and love for our local public open spaces. This has been going on since 2021 :-)

Would you like to organize/ support/facillitate one?

😱Have you noticed your local park shutting at strange times?
You’re not alone - it’s happening all over Mumbai.

🌳 Parks are our escape, our kids’ playgrounds, our elders’ walking tracks.
But across Mumbai, random closures, arbitrary rules, poor maintenance are the norm.

Together, we can demand open access 5 am–11 pm DAILY - because this city deserves space to breathe, play & rest.

📢 Add your voice here, unlock Mumbai's open spaces.

Healthy, safe, and accessible public spaces are not a luxury — they are a right, especially in a city of 20 million people, with merely 1.2 sqm open space/person!

🌿Let's do this, Mumbai! More info on the petition link (in bio &stories). 3 min read.
