The Family Welfare Agency (FWA) was established in the post partition period in 1950 to work with families by professionals in the field such as Dr. G.R. Banerjee. FWA has worked with various individual and family issues including adoption, mental and physical disability, as well as groups of women, children and youth.
Experiences with the youth within the community highlighted the need to work with senior citizens. It is a pioneer to initiate grass root level work for the elderly. Day care services for the senior citizens started in 1979, much prior to the same introduced in Government 5year plans.
FWA has made significant contribution in the field of Gerontology over the 4 decades through direct services within the community especially the underprivileged elderly
Networking of organisation’s working for the care of the elderly (2000) and ward wise networking elder care initiatives (2003) were introduced by FWA in the city of Mumbai to highlight the issues and needs of senior citizens and develop collaborations within and across different systems and service providers.
