In response to growing environmental degradation due to irresponsible tourist littering, over 150 citizens came together, including local residents, youth, civil society groups and environmental stewards to remove 5 tons of waste from this ecologically sensitive region, a vital drinking water source and biodiversity hotspot.

This inspiring collective action, galvanized by MLA Shivendraraje Bhosale’s call to action led by हरित सातारा and supported by the Satara Municipal Council, SagarMitra Abhiyan, Satara Cyclist Club, Satara Kendriya Utpadak Sangh, and many others, demonstrates the transformative potential of community-led environmental stewardship.

This initiative aligns in our ongoing commitment under the Localizing Plastic Action through Communities ( ) project to advance city-level plastic circularity by enabling community-driven and youth engagement in sustainable waste systems to create long-lasting systemic impact.

Making Community Sanitation Inclusive, Sustainable and Aspirational!

On , the Solid Waste Management Department of MyBmc, in collaboration with AIILSG Mumbai, UNICEF India Maharashtra, and other development partners, hosted a city-wide workshop titled “Strengthening the CBO Model for Inclusive and Sustainable Community Sanitation in Mumbai.”

The workshop united over 600 stakeholders, including CBOs, toilet caretakers, sanitation workers, NGOs, CSR partners, technical experts and the Government officials. The workshop explored grassroot solutions for strengthening, scaling up and sustaining the CBO-led hashtag model across Mumbai.

Shri. Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, BMC, highlighted Mumbai's plan to expand its 2,300 SSP community toilets by an additional 1,000+ units, urging CSR partners to invest in operations, maintenance, skilling, and microfinance. Mr. Navnath Wath, Mission Director, Swachh Maharashtra Mission -Urban, emphasized the need to move beyond access and towards sustainable, community-led sanitation models that integrate innovation with economic viability.

A strategic roadmap for this initiative was presented by AIILSG Mumbai, outlining a vision for a more inclusive, responsive, and hashtag sustainable sanitation ecosystem. The workshop featured partcipatory engagement, with technical partners sharing innovative solutions and CBOs sharing their experiences from the ground in the same panels.

For the first time, CBOs and caretakers of toilets were provided with a platform to present their entrepreneurial efforts and achievements in sustaining the sanitation facilities and also through their experiences, highlight the potential future support to strengthen the systems further. Other sessions focused on social protection schemes, PPE usage, and integrating safety and dignity into sanitation work. Our sincere gratitude to UNICEF India Mumbai and Unilever (HUL) for providing PPE kits to the participants.

This workshop marks the start of a collaborative journey towards an inclusive urban sanitation ecosystem, positioning community toilets as community assets and spaces, with CBOs as equal partners with BMC.
