Some comedy scenes just get everything right. The writing, the timing, the blocking n the performances all come together perfectly in this scene from Hera Pheri. Dinesh Hingoo’s constant clinginess while Raju keeps trying to escape makes the whole sequence even funnier. Akshay Kumar’s expressions n the way the scene keeps pulling him back into the conversation are just brilliant. It’s the kind of comedy that feels effortless but is actually built on incredibly precise writing n performance timing. One of those Hera Pheri scenes that deserves way more love. 😂

Woh Kaun Thi? (1964) is one of my favourite Hindi noirs, a film that blends mystery, romance n Gothic thriller elements so effortlessly. Raj Khosla creates this strange, haunting world of foggy roads, lonely nights, a mysterious woman in white n a story that keeps making you question what is real. Based on Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White, the film also gave us two of its most famous songs, “Lag Ja Gale” n “Naina Barse Rimjhim Rimjhim”, both composed by Madan Mohan. Even the little details, like the mysteriously stopping windshield wipers, add to the unsettling mood. More than 60 years later, Woh Kaun Thi? still feels mysterious, atmospheric n beautifully eerie.

One of the most intense family moments in Dil Dhadakne Do, when Kabir finally clashes with his father. What starts as a conversation about Kabir’s future quickly turns into a heated argument, with years of pressure coming out in the open. Kamal reminds him about the family business n the expectations attached to being a Mehra. Kabir, already frustrated with how his life is being decided for him, pushes back. The “plane chahiye ki nahi tumhe?” line makes the whole exchange even more personal, showing how money, privilege n family pressure can still create real conflict.

LAKSHYA is more than a war film. Farhan Akhtar built it around Karan Shergill’s journey of finding purpose, using the Kargil conflict as its backdrop. The film was shot across Ladakh, Dehradun n Mumbai, with around five months spent shooting in Ladakh. The extreme conditions included night shoots at temperatures of -8°C to -9°C. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music also follows Karan’s journey, from the restless “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon” to “Kandhon Se Milte Hain Kandhe”. The film was shot on 35mm with anamorphic lenses, giving its vast landscapes a striking scale. With Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Boman Irani n Sushant Singh, Lakshya remains a detailed blend of character, music n visual storytelling.

The climax of Guru is one of those scenes that stays with you. Abhishek Bachchan is brilliant as Gurukant Desai, bringing confidence, anger n emotion to every line. The filmmaking makes it even more powerful, with low frame rate shots, whip pans, sudden close-ups n well-placed master shots. Mani Ratnam keeps the scene full of energy without making it feel overdone. The camera moves with the performance, making the whole speech feel raw, intense n larger than life. A beautifully made scene from a beautifully made film.

4 years of Chup: Revenge of the Artist released on 23 September 2022, R. Balki’s thriller explored film criticism through the psyche of an artist, while paying tribute to Guru Dutt n 'Kaagaz Ke Phool'. With Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwanthary n Pooja Bhatt in an unexpected cast, the film mixed suspense, romance n a deep love for cinema. Khakee started with a script by Shridhar Raghavan, who had a background in journalism n had covered the police beat. Rajkumar Santoshi connected with the story n turned it into a gritty cop thriller about a police team escorting Iqbal Ansari from Maharashtra to Mumbai. Amitabh Bachchan’s ageing cop was imagined as a 30-years-later version of his Zanjeer character, while Akshay Kumar’s Shekhar was deliberately made funny n charming despite being corrupt. Ajay Devgn brought menace to Yashwant Angre, Atul Kulkarni gave a restrained performance as Ansari, n Aishwarya Rai’s unexpected turn added another layer to the film. A terrific ensemble, grounded action n Santoshi’s direction made Khakee memorable.

The Bajirao Mastani climax is built with real craft, with the vision of Bhansali. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for this 2015 film. Khamoshi: The Musical remains a beautiful reminder of where Sanjay Leela Bhansali's cinema began. Released in 1996, his directorial debut brought together Manisha Koirala, Salman Khan, Nana Patekar n Seema Biswas in a story where music becomes the language of love, family n emotions. Manisha's performance as Annie feels warm n effortless, while Seema Biswas brings so much depth to Flavy through expressions n silence. Salman n Manisha shared a lovely chemistry on screen, n they looked absolutely beautiful together. Jatin-Lalit's music gave us timeless songs like Aaj Main Upar, Bahon Ke Darmiyan n Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai. Anil Mehta's cinematography beautifully captures Goa, while Sutapa Sikdar's dialogues add emotional depth to the characters. A truly special Bhansali debut.
