This year, the drills brought together thousands of students, teachers, community members, and staff, all practicing one simple, life-saving action: "๐ƒ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ, ๐‚๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‡๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐Ž๐ง".

Across government and private schools, community centers, AKDN institutions, and partner agencies, our teams facilitated structured drills that reached over 3.5 ๐ฅ๐š๐ค๐ก ๐ฉ๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž. What we witnessed was more than participation โ€” it was collective awareness in action: children rehearsing, teachers guiding, and community members supporting one another as they practiced how to react when the Earthquake happens.

These moments reaffirm why this annual exercise matters. Preparedness is not abstract, it is a habit built through repetition. And when communities practice together year after year, they strengthen their ability to respond not just to major disasters but to the everyday risks that demand quick, confident action.

We extend our gratitude to the government institutions, participating schools, community leaders, AKDN agencies, and our dedicated field teams for making this yearโ€™s a meaningful and impactful effort across locations.

๐Ÿ”ฅ What if your city could respond to disasters before they escalate?

This , we celebrated resilience in action. 41 frontline professionals from Mira-Bhayandarโ€™s and (SWM) teams completed our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training, part of the Urban Habitat Risk Resilience (UHRR) Program supported by Tata Trusts.

Urban India faces intensifying climate and disaster risksโ€”from heatwaves and floods to fires and earthquakes. CERT training equips teams with life-saving skills: first aid, CPR/AED, fire safety, casualty handling, and disaster response.

The workshop resonated strongly with both groupsโ€”Fire Department teams strengthened coordination, rapid response strategies, and hands-on emergency skills, while SWM teams developed a critical understanding of disaster risk management, safe operational practices, and their role in supporting frontline responders during crises. Learning together through real-world case studies from Kerala, Chennai, Kolhapur, and Adilabad made the learning practical and contextual.

Grateful to MBMC- Mira Bhaindar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shri Radhabinod Aribam Sharma, Additional Commissioner Shri. Sachin Bangar, Deputy Commissioner, and Chief Fire Officer, Shri. Prakash Borade, and Ms. Anuradha Navalkar, Grants Manager from Tata Trusts for their continued support to strengthen urban resilience.

Every training like this transform โ€”not just into safer spacesโ€”but into ready to respond, recover, and thrive.

๐ŸŒฑOn this , AKAHโ€™s efforts go beyond tree planting. We are working towards mitigating , reducing , and restoring ecosystem services in a landslide-prone area.

On June 5, 2025, AKAH India, in collaboration with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), organized a Tree Plantation Drive at Parsik Hill, Belapur, a site highly vulnerable to rainfall-induced landslides. This initiative is part of a long-term strategy to prevent soil erosion and stabilize slopes through a three-tier plantation system. The ongoing reforestation effort spans 1.5 acres of affected hill slope, where a total of 28,500 native plantsโ€”deep-rooted, medium-rooted, and shallow-rooted have been planted at distinct slope levels to strengthen the natural defense against erosion and .

The plantation drive features native terrestrial species like Surangi, Jamun, White Jamun, Mulberry, Cashew, and Amla, all of which contribute to the distinct flora and long-term health of the local ecosystem.

We were honored to have the presence of Dr. Kailas Shinde, Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Rajesh Pawar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, and Mr. Kisanrao Palande, Deputy Municipal Commissioner - Garden Department, along with enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers and NGO representatives.

This collaborative initiative reinforces our commitment to nature-based solutions, climate adaptation, and disaster risk reductionโ€”one tree at a time.

Echoes from the expertsโ€” Mitigating Urban Climate Risks

As part of the series, we turn our focus to an essential conversation from the Chapter on โ€˜Strategies for Urban Climate Risk Mitigation.โ€™

The discussion explored actionable solutions for mitigating urban , enhancing waste management systems, and promoting sustainable public transportation.

Moderated by Sayli Udas Mankikar from ICLEI South Asia, the session featured insights from Parul Agarwala (UN-Habitat India), Sunil Pote from MAHAPREIT and Neha Awasthi (C40 Cities), each bringing invaluable expertise in urban resilience and sustainability.

Hereโ€™s what we learned:
โœ… Mandating Energy Efficiency โ€“ Municipal bodies should mandate the use of BLDC fans, motion sensors, and LED lighting in all city operations to drive large-scale energy savings.
โœ… Urban Planning for Heat Resilience โ€“ Cities must revise their Development Control Rules (DCRs) to integrate climate adaptation, following Chennaiโ€™s example of embedding heat mitigation strategies into regulations.
โœ… Prioritizing Climate Budgeting โ€“ Climate action needs dedicated funding. Mumbai currently allocates 30% of its budget to environmental initiatives, setting an example for other cities to follow.
โœ… Improving Public Transport & Air Quality โ€“ Expanding air quality monitoring networks and increasing the number of air-conditioned buses can help curb emissions while making public transport more accessible.
โœ… Streamlining Climate Partnerships โ€“ Local governments must simplify regulatory processes to enable faster, more effective collaborations with donors and organizations willing to co-invest in climate solutions.
โœ… Ensuring a Just Climate Transition โ€“ Upskilling, capacity building, and advocacy should be woven into all climate projects to ensure equity and inclusivity in the transition to a greener economy.

This dialogue reinforced the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and integrating climate action into city governance.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What policy shifts do you think could accelerate climate resilience in cities?

Turning insights into action: Scaling Local Solutions for Urban Resilience

The Mumbai Chapter 2025 brought together urban local bodies, government agencies, CSR professionals, businesses, and think tanks to chart a path forward for resilient cities.

A key highlight of the workshop was the launch of the for Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) by Shri. Praveen Pardeshi (IAS), CEO of Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), who joined as the Chief Guest.

Key Insights from Mr. Pardeshiโ€™s Address:
โœ… Local solutions can be city-scale solutions โ€“ Rooftop solar, retrofitting, and energy-efficient appliances like BLDC fans can significantly reduce electricity consumption and costs.
โœ… Behavioral shifts matter โ€“ Simple actions like reducing water usage, avoiding reflective glass, and prioritizing public transport can lead to meaningful carbon footprint reductions.
โœ… Water & waste management is key โ€“ Instead of building more dams, proper treatment and recycling of wastewater can sustainably meet the cityโ€™s water demands.
โœ… Better planning leads to better cities โ€“ Global cities like New York and Tokyo balance high density with green spaces due to their higher Floor Space Index (FSI). Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad must optimize urban planning to enhance livability.

Mr. Pardeshiโ€™s message inspired the audience to take ownership of climate solutions alongside urban local bodies, emphasizing the power of collective action.

What local climate solutions do you think can be scaled for city-wide impact?
