Hermit Crab moving over a bed of Zooanthids
Napean Sea Road, Mumbai
May '26

" ... we were looking out for zooanthids in the tide pools and this hermit crab moving over them added to our joy of sighting them !

The Hermit Crab have soft bodies and need the protection of 'borrowed' shells. They move to bigger shells as they grow with successive molts.

'Tide pooling' in the inter tidal zone offers an exciting experience for the enthusiast as well the students and researchers ! It is areminder to all of us about the beauty and the rich diversity of our marine life and the threats it face in today's times !

*Porcelain Crab
Haji Ali, Mumbai
Feb '09

" ... we came upon this small Porcelain crab as it nestled under a rock on the Haji Ali shores. Typically resting in crevices which is facilitated by their flattened bodies, they can be routinely sighted on the rocky shores of Haji Ali.

This Porcelain Crab was intently looking into the camera as if resting its head on those large claws ... their claws are indeed large compared to their overall body size and a great asset in warding off competitors in territorial disputes.

While termed crabs, they are not 'true' crabs and are more related to squat lobsters. They are 'fragile' animals and can shed an appendage when attacked ... which incidentally, can easily regenerate over several molts !"

*Crab - beautiful camouflage !

Napean Sea Road, Mumbai
April '26

" ... we were patiently waiting for a crab to come out of a rocky crevice to feed and all our attention so focussed on it that we were completely oblivious to this crab which was right close by ! Such a beautiful camouflage this crab had that it almost disappeared on the barnacle encrusted rockface.

It seemed so confident of its camouflage that it allowed me to get a little closer to take some images ... perhaps it is a young one or deemed not edible ... so we were not perceived as threat ! Otherwise crabs are quick to retreat to the protection of their crevices at the first sign of a threat or danger !"

* id appreciated - thank you.

Hermit Crab
Napean Sea Road, Mumbai
April '26

" A Hermit Crab peeps out of its protective shell before moving ... their stalked beady eyes are a marvel ! They are made of compound lenses offering almost a 360 degree vision and they sit on mobile stalks which can pivot independently. The Hermit Crab retracts them as well as its body into its protective shell at the first hint of trouble.

Watching them emerge out of their shells to wander, is almost magical and a surprise, as a stationary shell suddenly 'springs' to life and starts moving ...

They are more of relatives of the Lobsters or the Squat Lobsters. As they lack their own hard exoskeleton, they have live in borrowed shells ... and periodically change as they molt and grow. They can thus be sighted in shells of different shapes and sizes "

Sea Anemones
Haji Ali, Mumbai
April '26

" They catch your eye and make you stop !
And when in multiples, you pause and admire !

The Sea anemones are indeed beautiful, belying that they are predatory in nature ! They are armed with poisonous 'harpoons' with which they sting and paralyze their prey like small fish, plankton, crabs, mussels, and other marine invertebrates.

They resemble 'flowers' and come in various shades and sizes. Essentially sessile, they can move, if and when required.

Sea anemones are found both in the deep as well as shallow coastal waters ! While these were sighted on the rocky shore of Haji Ali, we have come across Sea Anemones on sandy beaches like the Girgaum Chowpatty as well ... "

Periwinkles
Napean Sea Road, Mumbai
April '26

" this rock stood exposed in the low tide revealing a cladding of Periwinkles and a couple of barnacles on it. The adjacent rock showed a streak of developing Blue Sponge to complete the picture.

Periwinkles are dwellers of rocky shores in the inter tidal zones. While they do wander for food, they can attach themselves to rocks temporarily, to escape drying out ! They feed primarily on algae but are omnivorous.

Although, they are sea snails, some species are found even in sweet water as well as brackish waters. Some species like the Common Periwinkles, are edible sea snails - marine mollusks - gastropods and have been a part of human diet for centuries.

*Maroon Stone Crab
Menippe rumphii
Haji Ali, Mumbai - April '26

Haji Ali shores are home to a diversity of crab species and on many occasions, we have seen crab hunters look for those deemed edible ... this crab ( id confirmation requested ) was, however, entangled in a fisherman's net and got to see another day as the species is not favoured on the table !

Often, abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing nets - ghost nets - that drift in the ocean or snag on reefs, can trap and kill marine life. They make up around 10% of ocean plastic pollution, these durable nylon nets can persist for centuries, damaging corals and endangering creatures like turtles, dolphins, and fish.

The waters around the coast are certainly polluted because of human impacts and it is reflected in the the species which live here, making them not very suitable for eating !!!

However, 'tide pooling' in the inter tidal zone offers an exciting experience for the enthusiast as well the students and researchers ! It is reminder to all of us about the beauty and the rich diversity of our marine life and the threats it face in today's times !

Starfish or Sea Stars
Mumbai - April '26

These Echinoderms are marine invertebrates and despite their name, they are not actually fish as they lack gills, scales, and fins. They are found in all of the oceans, from warm to cold waters.
They use a complex internal hydraulic system for movements, adhesion and even food manipulation.

One very remarkable quality is their ability to regenerate a lost limb ...
They can often be found on sandy shores and can disappear out of sight by burying themselves in the sand.

Feather duster Worm
Family - Sabellidae
Napean Sea Road, Mumbai
April '26

"the Feather duster Worm is yet another beauty from the inter tidal zone of our shores. When the fans are retracted in the tube, it can be almost impossible to locate this filter feeder but if one is a little patient, the fans can be seen projecting out as the worms start feeding. It is indeed one breathtaking sights !

'Tide pooling' in the inter tidal zone offers an exciting experience for the enthusiast as well the students and researchers ! It is reminder to all of us about the rich diversity of our marine life, in spite of the ubiquitous garbage which is now integral to any urban location !!!
