International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed every year on May 29. This day honors the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve under the UN flag in peacekeeping operations around the world.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, and May 29 was chosen to mark the date in 1948 when the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), began operations in Palestine.
