Surfing Swami [Jack Hebner] is credited as being the original pioneer of surfing in India, having first brought the sport to India’s shores in 1976. In 2002 Swami established Mantra Surf Club [www.surfingindia.net] near Mangalore, Karnataka. Mantra Surf Club and the ’Surfing Swami have since appeared in over 100 newspaper and magazines world wide since 2009. During these years Swami also inspired

the founding of the Surfing Federation of India [SFI] with local youth and became their patron, mentor and coach for the Surf Team India. Surf film director Taylor Steel sought Swami’s participation in the production of “Castles in the Sky” featuring several surf destinations in India, thus launching the sport of surfing in India onto the international stage. Swami has been behind the spreading of surfing in India via the organization of several National Surf Events attracting the media and corporate participation. Inspired by Swami in 2015 members of Surf Team India became the first Indian surfers to participate in a WSL event in Hainan, China. In 2015 members of Mantra Surf Club under Swami’s tutelage guided the Rip Curl Search for Surf in the Lakshadweep Islands. Swami’s team has also guided surfers from numerous international surf magazines thru the mysterious waters of India. In 2014 Surfing Swami singlehandedly began the work of the Surfing Swami Foundation [SSF], funding all its activities personally. As of February 2017 the Surfing Swami Foundation has been officially registered with the government of India and is presently poised to expand the activities of SSF with the help of our Co-Vice Chairmen Patty Upton & Jonty Rhodes and the Directors Dhananjay Shetty, Kiran Kumar and Shamanth Kumar. Surfing Swami (1946-2020) : His legacy lives on.

Surfing Swami played a pivotal role in bringing the "king of sports," surfing, to the entire Indian subcontinent. This photograph, captured by Swami himself in 2004, immortalizes a crucial moment in history: the humble beginnings of Mantra Surf Club, a legacy deeply cherished by those who understand Swami's impact on the sport.

Swami's contributions to the surfing world are unparalleled. He established the world’s first surfing ashram, as well as India’s first surf club. From Mantra Surf Clubs modest origins, Swami, along with his surf team (mostly his own students!), embarked on a journey across both coasts of India as well as outer Islands under the control of India. They discovered hidden gems: beach breaks, jetty breaks, river mouth breaks, pier and point breaks. Along the way, they introduced countless individuals to the sport, many of whom had never even glimpsed at a surfboard.

This dedication earned Swami the well-deserved title of “India’s Father of Surfing." Much like the Hawaiians, the first surfers on Earth who recognized the spiritual dimension of the sport, Swami consistently emphasized surfing's deeper, soulful aspects. He was uncompromising in his desire for dignity and moral character from his students, considering these prerequisites for joining his ashram and club. For those lacking such qualities, Swami became a living example, patiently guiding them with his own exemplary conduct.

It's important to remember that, during this same era, Swami was also a prominent figure in the worldwide Bhakti Yoga movement. Widely respected by Indian Gurus and Bhakti Yoga aspirants for his saintly character and knowledge of Vedic Dharma, Swami believed surfing itself to be a form of yoga, a path to help one find harmony with nature and ultimately the Divine.

Today, thanks to Swami's pioneering efforts, India boasts thousands of surfers, along with a thriving network of surf schools, camps, and clubs. His legacy continues to fuel the exponential growth of the sport in the vibrant subcontinent of India.

Surfing Swami (1946-2020): Su legado sigue vivo.
Haridas Babaji

"Yoga means the process to link with the divine, so if surfing does that for you then yes, it is yoga. For someone else, it may be mountain climbing or something similar. If asked about the spirituality of surfing, most surfers will relate their experience in sort of a Zen way. In Zen, spirituality is impersonal, but in Bhakti yoga it is different, spirituality becomes very personal — divinity has personality.
Being that we are all individuals, as parts of the divine, we have eternal personalities. We may have different callings, but for some of us, it’s the call of the ocean." Surfing Swami Jack Hebner 2046-2020

“For me, surfing as a stand-alone is not totally spiritual. If it were, then you would not have things like localism and attitude in the water. But when a surfer understands whose energy he is riding, who he is and the eternal connection between the energy, himself and the source, then surfing becomes something spiritual. The mundane is transformed to become transcendental.
It doesn’t stop either when the session is over. The consciousness of being in the presence of Krishna follows you everywhere and in everything you do. That is called samadhi or Krishna consciousness. Without knowing who you are, who the people around you are, who all living creatures around you are, it is not possible to help relieve their suffering. Having reached enlightenment, one is then able to serve and help all of humanity as well as the environment.”
Surfiing Swami - 1946 - 2020

Reporter: Why have reporters so often pressured you to give “feel good” interviews?

Surfing Swami/Jack Hebner: We must make everyone feel good — never mind the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, but there’s no substitute for it. Sacrificing it for so-called political correctness metastasizes problems, it doesn’t solve them.

Nothing is being done to fix this broken world. The so-called world leaders have no idea how to improve things. Rather, they’re compounding problems, using every unfortunate incident to increase their wealth, power and control. It’s time for people everywhere to stand up and demand real solutions. And if the leaders can’t deliver, they should step down. A politician caught lying should be banned from politics for life!" Surfing Swami - June 2016

"And what to speak of the over-fishing, whaling, slaughtering of dolphins and dumping of waste in our planet’s oceans? It is shameful. Our oceans are dying and humans are to blame. If people took a more spiritual view of the world, even a pagan view would be an improvement — then the ocean and the overall environment would not be suffering like it is. What people have to come to understand is that when the environment dies, we die with it. We are still as dependent on the environment as our caveman ancestors were –nothing has changed."
Surfing Swami

Jack Hebner grew up in Florida, and has brought his love of surfing to India. It’s not a place known for a surfing culture, but the so-called ‘Surfing Swami’ wants to change that.
