This Raksha Bandhan, the Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) celebrated the day at the ๐‚๐‘๐€๐‚๐Š ๐‚๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ž, ๐“๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ข, ๐’๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐›๐š๐ง by tying Rakhi to mangrove trees.
For us, this was more than a celebration. It was a promise to protect the mangroves that protect us.

Mangroves:
โ€ข Store and capture carbon
โ€ข Protect the coastline from erosion
โ€ข Reduce the impact of cyclones and storm surges
โ€ข Support biodiversity
โ€ข Provide food, resources and livelihoods to coastal communities

But the Sundarban mangroves are facing growing threats from climate change, rising sea levels, increasing salinity, erosion, habitat loss and human activities.
Protecting mangroves needs more than plantation. It needs regular monitoring, scientific research, restoration planning and strong community participation.

At PFRI, we combine field observations, geospatial analysis, data-based assessment and technology to better understand mangrove ecosystems and support restoration and conservation.

The Rakhi we tied today represents a simple message:
The ecosystems that protect us also need our protection.
Protecting mangroves means protecting biodiversity, coastal communities, livelihoods and the future of the Sundarban.
This Raksha Bandhan, let us strengthen our bond with nature.

This Independence Day, Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) marked 15 August 2026 not from a single location, but across the communities and places where our work takes root.

Our online Independence Day observance from Kolkata brought the Progyan team together for a reflective session centred on Indiaโ€™s journey to independence, the role of local communities, Indiaโ€™s social and institutional transformation after independence, and our vision for the future. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.

The spirit of the day also reached our field locations:
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ Maipith, Sundarbans, West Bengal โ€” Independence Day was observed at the research centre with local children and our field officer leading the flag-hoisting ceremony, making the celebration a meaningful community moment.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ Begusarai, Biha โ€” Progyanโ€™s work in the field was also marked through an Independence Day observance, reflecting our continued engagement with local communities.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ Deoghar, Jharkhand โ€” A member of the Progyan team represented PFRI and joined the Independence Day observance, extending the spirit of the occasion beyond our home state.

From Kolkata to the Sundarbans and across Jharkhand, this Independence Day reminded us that the meaning of freedom is not confined to a ceremony or a place. It lives in communities, participation, learning, responsibility and the shared aspiration to build a more inclusive and sustainable future.

On 9 August 2026, the ๐”๐๐„๐’๐‚๐Ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐โ€™๐ฌ ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ, Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI) was proud to be part of the launch of the International Centre and Coalition for Adaptive Research on Science of Indigenous Sustainability (ICARSIS), including the unveiling of its website.

The workshop brought together researchers, policymakers, civil society representatives, environmental practitioners and indigenous community voices for meaningful discussions on traditional ecological knowledge, climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, community-led solutions and the need to bridge indigenous knowledge with contemporary science and policy.

A recurring message throughout the discussions was clear: indigenous knowledge must not be treated merely as folklore or extracted as data. It must be recognised, documented ethically, validated through research, protected from appropriation, and meaningfully integrated into policy and practice with the participation of knowledge holders.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, PFRI also launched the special issue of its '๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ๐š๐ง ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž: ๐–๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง, ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž & ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ'. The issue brings together perspectives on women, science, digital inclusion, traditional ecological knowledge and the role of indigenous women as custodians of knowledge and biodiversity.

The launch marked an important step towards creating stronger pathways between community knowledge, scientific research, policy and action while recognising the knowledge, leadership and lived experiences of indigenous communities.

On 29 July 2026, the Progyan Pfri, the research wing of the South Asian Forum for Environment - SAFE, in collaboration with the ๐’๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐›๐š๐ง ๐“๐ข๐ ๐ž๐ซ ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž (๐’๐“๐‘), celebrated Global Tiger Day 2026 at the Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR), Sajnekhali, Sundarban.

The celebration brought together young minds through engaging drawing, quiz, and extempore competitions, emphasizing that the future of the Royal Bengal Tiger depends on collective action. Reflecting this year's global conservation focus on protecting tiger habitats through community participation and youth engagement, students learned about the tiger's crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and the importance of the Sundarban mangroves as natural climate defenders. The programme inspired participants to become responsible stewards of nature and champions of wildlife conservation.

On the occasion of World Mangrove Day, the South Asian Forum for Environment - SAFE and the Progyan Pfri, in collaboration with the ๐‘๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐‚๐ฅ๐ฎ๐› ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐š ๐‚๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐š๐๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž, organized a community-driven celebration at the ๐‚๐‘๐€๐‚๐Š ๐‚๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ž of PFRI & SAFE, Tipligheri, Lahiripur Gram Panchayat, Gosaba Block, in the Indian Sundarban.

The celebration brought together local communities, Sabuj Pathshala students, children, and volunteers in a series of meaningful activities, including mangrove awareness sessions, creek-side nature walks, interactive discussions on the importance of mangrove ecosystem services, and plantation activities.

Through experiential learning and community participation, the programme aimed to strengthen awareness about the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastal ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing climate resilience. By empowering children and community members with knowledge and practical action, we continue to nurture a new generation of Mangrove Guardians dedicated to safeguarding the Sundarbans.

The workshop brought together leading experts, policymakers, researchers, practitioners and development partners to deliberate on strengthening climate-resilient agroforestry systems and sustainable rural livelihoods through science-informed decision-making and collaborative action.

The distinguished expert panel included Mr. I. Anwardeen, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Mission Director, Green Tamil Nadu Mission; Mr. Jayapandi, Former Joint Director of Horticulture, Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops, Government of Tamil Nadu; and Dr. Dipnarayan Ganguly, Scientist-C, National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Chennai.

The discussions were enriched by active participation from representatives of IndusInd Bank, IIT Madras (IITM), South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE), SRM University, Progyan Foundation for Research and Innovation (PFRI), Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), and several other organizations like Shiv Nadar university, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology.

The workshop highlighted the need for robust national and state-level loss and damage frameworks, greater adoption of native species in agroforestry, and strengthened public-private partnerships to translate policy into action. Participants emphasised that long-term sustainability depends on blended finance involving CSR, government, private investment and community contributions, while programme success requires context-specific planning, ecologically appropriate policy convergence, and livelihood-sensitive agroforestry models that support farmers during transition periods. The discussions also underscored the importance of integrating scientific and traditional knowledge through bottom-up approaches, communicating recommendations in simple, community-friendly language, embedding post-project sustainability from the outset, and promoting nature-based solutions to restore degraded and pollution-affected landscapes.

The workshop reaffirmed that science, policy, finance and community participation must work together to build resilient landscapes, sustainable livelihoods and climate-ready rural communities.

Horseshoe crabs play a vital role in maintaining coastal biodiversity. Their eggs provide food for migratory birds and marine life, while their shells support a variety of organisms, contributing to the health of coastal ecosystems.
