Fort Keshgarh in Nowshera, Jammu — A Key Stronghold of the Halemi Raj
Did you know? Fort Keshgarh, near Monglu in Jammu’s Nowshera region, was an important spiritual and strategic site controlled by the Banjara Sikhs during the Halemi Raj mission started by Guru Nanak Patshah.
This area played a crucial role in building early Khalsa power and sovereignty. In 1620 AD, Guru Hargobind Sahib visited here along with Emperor Jahangir during their Kashmir journey — a sign of its growing importance in Sikh history. Later, Guru Har Rai Sahib also visited in the mid-1600s, strengthening the region’s spiritual and political significance.
Nowshera is home to several Khalsa Raj forts, part of a smart defensive and logistical network managed by the Banjara Sikhs. These forts were not just centers for trade and administration but also vital military posts during battles. In the early 1700s, General Banda Singh Bahadar used these forts in his fight against Mughal forces, using their strategic positions to help establish Sikh sovereignty.
A proud chapter in Sikh history that deserves to be remembered! ✊✨
