Following independence from Britain in 1947, Himachal Pradesh was created as a province on 15 April 1948. This event is celebrated with a public holiday of its own - Himachal Day.

In 1950 it became a sub state under the Indian constitution then becoming a union territory in 1956.

On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971 making it the 18th state of India. Y.S. Parmar became the state’s first chief minister.

Between its creation in 1948 and statehood in 1971, Himachal Pradesh also changed its boundaries several times, incorporating smaller districts in the region.

After The independence Himachal Pradesh as political entity came into existence on 15th April, 1948. 26 January 1950 with the implementation of the Constitution of India Himachal as a part C state become union territory under Chief commissioner. It was constituted by integrating the princely States of Chamba, Mandi, Suket, Sirmaur and 26 smaller states known as the Punjab Hill States. Subsequently, in 1954 Bilaspur, which was then a part "C" State, was also merged with Himachal Pradesh. In 1960 District Kinnaur was carved out of District Mahsu which was earlier constituted by merging 27 hill states.

After the re-organization of Punjab in 1966, Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti Districts, Una Tehsil of Hoshiarpur District and Nalagarh Tehsil of Ambala District were also merged with the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh. On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971. Thus Himachal emerged as the eighteenth state of the Indian Union. In 1972 Districts of Kangra and Mahasu were reorganized. District Kangra was trifurcated ,Una and Hamirpur Tehsils were made into separate Districts. Some areas of Mahasu District were merged with Shimla District while the others formed the new District of Solan.

After India became free in 1947, there was a demand in some quarters for the merger of Hill States with the east Punjab but it met with vehement opposition from the rulers and people. In what is Himachal Pradesh today, the Praja Mandal workers and the rulers had different opinions about the future of these hilly states. After a brief spell of hectic negotiation, the rulers and the Praja Mandal workers decided to inform Government of India to form a union of these small hill states with the name of Himachal Pradesh. In view of these events, the Central Government decided to integrate all these principalities into a single unit to be administered by Govt. of India through a Chief Commissioner.

As a result, Himachal Pradesh came into being as a part ‘C’ State of the Indian Union on 15th April, 1948 by integration/merger together of 31 big and small hill states. These states were Baghat, Bhajji, Baghal, Bija, Balsen, Bushehar, Chamba, Darkoti, Deloth-Dhadi, Dhami, Ghund, Jubbal, Khaneti, Kyarkoti, Kumarsain, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mandi, Madhan, Mahlog, Mangal, Kot(Ratesh), Keonthal, Rawinigarh, Sangri, Sirmaur, Suket, Tharoch & Theog. All these areas at that time constituted four districts viz. Chamba, Mahasu, Mandi and Sirmaur with an area of 27,169 square kilometres. In 1954, the neighbouring State of Bilaspur was integrated with Himachal Pradesh, thereby adding one more district with an area of 1167 square kilometres.

Himachal Pradesh continued as a part ‘C’ State of the Indian Union till 1956 when the states' Reorganisation Commission submitted its recommendations to abolish the categorisation of states as part A, B, C, etc. and recommended the merger of all part `C' states either with the adjoining states of higher status or to maintain these independently as union territories till a further decision was taken. Himachal Pradesh continued to exist as a Union Territory till the conferment of statehood on 25th January 1971 .

In 1960, the border Chini tehsil of Mahasu district was carved out as a separate administrative unit and district Kinnaur was formed raising the total number of districts to six. On Ist November, 1966, the then Punjab State was reorganised with the formation of Haryana as a separate state and merger of the then Kullu, Kangra, Shimla and some hilly areas of Hoshiarpur district and Dalhousie of Gurdaspur district into Himachal Pradesh constituting the four new districts viz. Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti, Kangra and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and merging Dalhousie into Chamba district. With this addition, Himachal Pradesh comprised of ten districts, an area of 55,673 sq. Kilometres and a population of 28.12 lakh according to 1961 census. 6,864,602 i.e. 68 Lakh in 2011 census and now we'll around 70 Lakh in total.

On 1st September 1972, two more districts viz. Hamirpur and Una were created by trifurcation of Kangra district and the Mahasu and Solan districts were reorganised as Shimla and Solan districts. In this re-organisation, Shimla town was re-organised with the erstwhile Mahasu district to form Shimla district.

It was on January 25, 1971, when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had provided statehood to the state. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh was a Union territory of India.
Himachal Pradesh today celebrating its 47th statehood day.

The province comprised the hill districts around Shimla and southern hill areas of the former Punjab region. Himachal became a part C state on 26 January 1950 with the implementation of the Constitution of India. Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory on 1 November 1956. On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971. Thus Himachal emerged as the eighteenth state of the Indian Union.

Himachal Pradesh is famous for its natural beauty, hill stations, and temples.[8] Himachal Pradesh has been ranked fifteenth in the list of the highest per capita incomes of Indian states and union territories for year 2013-14.[9] Many perennial rivers flow in the state, and numerous hydroelectric projects set up. Himachal produces surplus hydroelectricity and sells it to other states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan.[10] Hydroelectric power projects, tourism, and agriculture form important parts of the state's economy.[10]

The state has several valleys,[11]and more than 90% of the population living in rural areas.[12]Practically all houses have a toilet and 100% hygiene has been achieved in the state.[13] The villages have good connectivity with roads, public health centres, and now with high-speed broadband.

Shimla district has maximum urban population of 25%. It has incorporated environmental protection and tourism development has been aided with a government ban on the use of polyethylene bags, reducing litter, and to***co products, to aid people's health. According to a 2005 Transparency International survey, Himachal Pradesh was ranked the second-least corrupt state in the country, after Kerala

The crux is that the foundation of Himachal was laid on April 15, 1948 which is celebrated as Himachal Day but it was on Jan 25, 1971 when Himachal was carved out as 18th state of India and we celebrate it as statehood day
