Because sustainable water solutions don’t come from the top - they are built with people on the ground.

Completed Restoration of Keelkulam Kanmoi Neerpidi Oorani 💧✅

The restoration of Keelkulam Kanmoi Neerpidi Oorani has been completed. The works were initiated with a traditional pooja ceremony in the presence of the Assistant Engineer (AE) and the Ward Councillor.

The Oorani was first cleared of invasive Prosopis and reeds. A detailed topographical survey was then conducted using a DGPS instrument, followed by scratching work around the Oorani to facilitate bund formation.

Desilting and bund strengthening were carried out using excavators and tippers. In total, around 3,300 cubic metres of silt were removed and effectively used for bund strengthening and proper sectioning.

Installed inlet and outlet pipes to ensure proper water inflow and outflow, along with the construction of an inlet chamber. As part of the ecological restoration effort, an island was also created within the Oorani.

The Oorani is now filled with water, and the surrounding communities have already started benefiting from it, using it for bathing, washing livestock, and providing drinking water for cattle.

This restoration supports local water security, community use, and ecological improvement of the water body.
