No Background Needed: French Woman Amazed by Golden Temple’s Langar
A French woman living in India has gone viral after sharing her experience at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the holiest Sikh shrine. Julia Chaigneau, who has been in Ahmedabad for nearly two years, expressed her amazement at the scale of the temple’s langar, or community kitchen.
She described the experience as “insane” and said it was hard to believe that millions of people are fed every day completely free of cost. “No religion, no status, no background needed. Just walk in. Eat. Be welcomed,” Julia shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The French designer was deeply moved by the volunteers who run the kitchen with no expectation in return. Standing there, she said, was “honestly very inspiring” and made her wonder how such a massive operation could even be possible.
Julia also praised the quality of the food, calling it hygienic and delicious. Many social media users agreed, saying most restaurants don’t even achieve this level of cleanliness and taste.
Viewers noted the incredible scale of the operation, with one person adding that even after watching documentaries, it’s hard to believe how millions are served daily with pure seva (selfless service).
The experience highlighted the generosity, altruism, and sense of community that the Golden Temple embodies. Volunteers give their time and energy wholeheartedly, guided by faith and a desire to serve humanity.
This glimpse into the world’s largest community kitchen left Julia and others reflecting on the power of kindness, service, and equality, showing how one place can truly inspire millions.
