Feeling so proud to participate in the United Nations Day, after so many years. I have been fortunate enough to work with the UNESCO for over a decade and a brief stint at the UNEP. Met some old colleagues and refreshed memories of this great institution. UN Day is observed on 24 October, every year to mark the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. There have been so many ups and downs and the role of the UN is often questioned. However, the organisation is still a beacon of hope for the future of the humanity and the planet as it is the only global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact. No other global organization gives hope to so many people for a better world and can deliver the future we want. Apart from actions on climate change, biodiversity, education, peace and the overall sustainable development goals (SDGs), the recently adopted Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations are truly the hope and action that we all want. Let’s all keep the UN shining and thriving.
