The Unseen life of an Army Brat
We all remember our respective first day when we joined our new job. Walking into the Office Desk, We were greeted with eager smiles and the most difficult question: "Where are you from?"
We hesitated for a moment. Are we from Pune, Hyderabad, or Srinagar? It's a question we have faced our entire life, from the first day of school. to every job interview and new city we 've moved to. It might seem like an innocent question to most, but for us, and many others like me-the answer is never straight forward.
Because the truth is Army Brats don't belong to any single place-we carry with us places of every city, state, or country we've lived In. Though I am originally from Uttar Pradesh, I had never lived there for more than 10 days in continuation because being an Army Brat means moving to a new place every 2 or 3 years.
But what does the term Army Brat' mean actually? For those who grew up in army families, it's much more than just a label.
Much like army officers wear ranks on their shoulders; their children wear the rank of 'army brat' in their hearts with pride. It represents a life of constant change, adaptability, and resilience.
The origin of the term 'army brat Where did this term come from?
Interestingly, it was first used in a 1921 dated book, where "BRAT" stood for British Regiment Attached Traveler.
It referred to the families who travelled with soldiers stationed abroad. Over time, the term evolved and came to describe all Military Children.
Eventually, 'BRAT' became known as Born, Raised, and Transferred, the words that perfectly capture the life cycle of an Army Brat.
Born, Raised, and Transferred
"Born, Raised, and Transferred highlights the essence of an army child's life. Born in one state, raised In another and before fully settling in, they are transferred to yet another place
The army exposes us to India's vast diversity, from Rajasthan's culture to Kerla's tranquility and North Eastern Vibes.
People often assume that Army Brats have a life of privilege, with benefits like free rations and CSD Canteen items. But with these privileges come unique struggles-living without Parents for years, constantly making new Friends, and feeling Isolated in a new place every few years.
Life on a Military base can also feel like living in a bubble. One key trait that sets army brats apart is discipline. From an early age, they learn the Importance of punctuality. Arriving 10 minutes early to work and waking up at 6 AM is the rule for us and it brings a different kind of adventure and fun to our lives.
Military Cantonments
A military cantonment is more than just a residential area: It's a world of its own, en-closed within boundaries that offer a unique sense of peace.
The charm of cantonments lles in the area, surrounded by greenery and the absence of overcrowding. Unlike busting cities, everything you need is just a short walk away, to reach a place rather than relying on vehicles.
The best part is the celebration of festivals. Whether It's Eld, Gurupurab, Navratri, Pongal, or Christmas, every festival is celebrated with equal joy and no discrimination.
Living in a Cantonment means Embracing every culture, every moment, and cherishing the diversity that comes with it.
My Identity, My pride, I will always carry the Identity of an Army Brat with pride. It taught us resilience, the ability to adapt quickly, and the importance of embracing every moment. no matter how fleeting. It's a life that has shaped my view of the World and given me a unique LENS to appreciate its vastness and diversity.
