Society for Indoor Environment -SIE

Society for Indoor Environment -SIE Society for Indoor Environment (SIE) is a non profit research and policy thinktank.

Society for Indoor Environment (SIE)" a non-government-organization registered under Society Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 3rd February 2017. SIE has all the representations from the pioneer and reputed research, engineering, medical, and educational institutes in India, including IITs, NITs, CSIR-NEERI, EMC, IPCA, ICMR and the University of Delhi. The core group of SIE formed this organization

to address the issues of indoor environment as people spend more than 90% of their daily times in indoor environments. As per latest Global Burden of a Disease report, indoor air pollution has been ranked as the second largest killer in India. The air pollution indoors is affecting the buildings and then the health, comfort, performance and behaviour of the occupants in such buildings. However, unfortunately, very less attention has been paid on this issue in our country. Therefore, it has become the need of an hour to address the issues of indoor environment and to find out the sustainable alternatives/solutions to save our indoor environments.

Rethinking the Air We Breathe Indoors ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

We are proud to announce the publication of our latest study with Techknowgreen Solutions Limited Global on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Under the projectโ€”India's first large-scale IAQ monitoring initiativeโ€”we analyzed 135 microenvironments in Mumbai and 30 in Chandrapur, spanning offices, schools, malls, and residences.

The data reveals a critical need for indoor air awareness:

Hidden Sources: PM10 and PM2.5 levels were significantly driven by common household practices like burning incense sticks and diyas.

Chemical Impact: Frequent use of room fresheners notably increased VOC concentrations.

Health Implications: 18% of participants showed PEFR (Lung Function) values below 80%.

Symptom Mapping: Coughing was the most prevalent symptom reported by participants.

Data-driven insights are the first step toward healthier indoor environments.

Indoor Air Quality in Indian Schools โ€“ Insights from 11 Cities

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is no longer just an environmental concern โ€” it is a public health and educational priority. The latest report launched by the Society for Indoor Environment (SIE)in Healthy Buildings 2025 at Hyderabad, in collaboration with Techknowgreen Solutions Limited Global and YOGa Clean Air, presents critical evidence from schools across Delhi, Gurugram, Agra, and eight cities in Maharashtra.

๐Ÿ”Ž What we found

Particulate matter (PMโ‚‚.โ‚… & PMโ‚โ‚€) levels were consistently above WHO guidelines across most classrooms.

Naturally ventilated classrooms offered fresh air but carried high particulate loads.

Mechanically ventilated classrooms reduced PM but often saw COโ‚‚ accumulation.

Hybrid systems (ventilation + filtration) emerged as the most effective, keeping both PM and COโ‚‚ within safe thresholds.

In Agra, settled dust revealed heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Cd), raising concerns about long-term health risks for children.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Why it matters
Children spend 6โ€“8 hours a day in classrooms. Poor IAQ doesnโ€™t just affect health โ€” it reduces attention, memory, and learning outcomes. The evidence is clear: clean classroom air is fundamental to both well-being and academic success.

๐Ÿ“Œ The way forward

Schools must invest in reliable monitoring, smart ventilation, and low-emission materials.

Teachers & parents should build awareness and advocate for healthy air practices.

Policymakers must integrate IAQ standards into education and infrastructure planning.

The panel discussion in SIE workshop at Healthy Buildings 2025 gave insights for having a national nodal centre (Indian Indoor Air Research Centre) to serve as a research and policy thinktank for India. The esteemed panel comprised of SIE Patron and Founding VP Prof. Mukesh Khare, SIE President Dr.Rakesh Kumar , Public Health expert and Ex IIPH Director Prof GVS Murthy, SIE partners Dr.Ajay Ojha from Techknowgreen Solutions Limited Global and Mr Sachin Panwar from YOGa Clean Air.

This is not a luxury. It is an investment in the health, equity, and future of our children. Clean air in classrooms must become the norm โ€” not an exception.

โœจ Letโ€™s reimagine schools as safe, healthy spaces where every child can breathe, learn, and thrive.

A workshop on 'Indoor Air pollution in urban Built Environment" was conducted by Dr.Priyanka Kulshreshtha (Ph.D) in School of Engineering at shardauniversity agra to generate awareness regarding indoor air quality and train the students to conduct monitoring in schools in Agra.

This workshop is a part of a series of workshops and awareness campaigns being conducted under SIE Project AIMS(Air Indoors Monitoring in Schools) wherein IAQ monitoring is being conducted in naturally ventilated and air conditioned schools of cities like Delhi, Gurugram,Mumbai and more...
Project AIMS is aiming to generate citizen awareness, develop monitoring skill and generate IAQ data from various cities of India.

Grateful to the Vice Chancellor Prof.Jayanthi Ranjan at Sharda University,Agra for showing interest in the subject and sharing her valuable insights for future collaborations. The workshop received tremendous response from the students showing interest by wanting to be part of SIE and Indoor Air research.
