| TSU Condemns Reported Arrests and Atrocities Against Chakma Civilians in Myanmarโs Rakhine State
Dampdep, May 31, 2026: The Tongchangya Studentsโ Union (TSU), General Headquarters, Dampdep, Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), Mizoram, has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the reported arbitrary arrests, abductions, assaults, and other alleged atrocities committed against innocent Chakma (Daignet/Tongchangya) civilians in Myanmarโs Rakhine State.
In a press release issued on Saturday, TSU stated that more than 100 civilians, including women, elderly persons, and village breadwinners, were reportedly detained, assaulted, and taken away following tensions linked to forced military recruitment on May 24, 2026, in Thinbaw Hla Village, Tawng Pyo Letwe Subtownship, Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State.
The Union further alleged that homes and properties belonging to Chakma villagers were looted and destroyed, causing widespread fear, trauma, and a growing humanitarian crisis among affected communities.
Describing the Chakma (Daignet/Tongchangya) people as a peace-loving indigenous community that has lived in Rakhine State for generations, TSU emphasized that any form of violence, intimidation, unlawful detention, forced recruitment, or oppression against civilians constitutes a serious violation of human rights and human dignity.
The organization acknowledged that several Chakma and Daignet organizations in Myanmar have already raised their voices and issued protest statements regarding the incidents. However, TSU noted that despite public claims that the situation had been resolved, reports suggest that many detained civilians have yet to be released.
TSUโs Key Demands
The Tongchangya Studentsโ Union has called for:
The immediate and unconditional release of all detained Chakma civilians.
An end to forced recruitment, intimidation, violence, and harassment targeting ethnic minority communities in Rakhine State.
Protection and security for vulnerable civilians, particularly women, children, and the elderly.
Unrestricted humanitarian access and adequate medical assistance for affected villages and families.
A transparent investigation into the reported incidents to ensure justice and accountability.
TSU also appealed to all parties involved to pursue peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding to prevent further tensions and promote peace, stability, and communal harmony in the region.
Expressing solidarity with the Chakma (Daignet/Tongchangya) population residing in Myanmarโs Arakan region, the Union urged democratic institutions, human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the international community to pay urgent attention to the plight of the affected people and support efforts aimed at achieving justice and a peaceful resolution.
