Hello readers and well-wishers,

As we endeavour to bring Lengkhawm to Delhi next month, we need your support. Delivering a successful exhibition at one of India’s foremost galleries involves huge operational costs.

About Lengkhawm in the Hills: Carefully curated to depart from token representations of tribal India as either victims or motifs and to challenge the flawed visualisation of hill tribes in mainstream media. The aim is to showcase Lamka’s beauty, strength, and richness by unpacking how the town and its people have travelled through time and space and today, are caught between tradition and modernity.

About This is Lamka: An art and cultural collective of 100+ artists, designers, and writers from Lamka. It began as a nonpareil grassroots-based, community-driven digital archiving project to preserve the visual histor(ies) of the Zo tribes in Lamka and beyond. In 2021, it culminated into a hugely successful exhibition supported by the British Council’s prestigious Heritage Grant for South Asia. This is Lamka has grown organically and travelled far and wide to other towns and cities in North East India, including the Legacy Thread’s exhibition by the North East India AV Archive.

It would have been impossible for us to have journeyed this far without the help of generous institutions and individuals, who saw potential in our mission to tediously claw back and meticulously retell our lost and forgotten histor(ies).

We hope that your support and funding will allow us to bring Lamka to Delhi and, hopefully through Delhi to the rest of the world. If you do require any additional information, please feel free to reach out at [email protected] or contact Golan Naulak at +91 9717691266 or John Simte at +91 9650361084.

Hoping to see you in Delhi next month!

Delhi - we are coming.

Lengkhawm is a contemporary art exhibition aimed at showcasing the history, culture and creativity of Lamka town in North-Eastern India. Inspired by their connection with their hometown, this exhibiton brings together more than a hundred young artists, designers, dreamers and writers from Lamka, both professionals and amateurs, in a singular endeavour of collectively curating a series of artwork representing their beloved town - in photography including photo archives, films, digital illustration, and an art installation as its centre piece.

Lamka gets her first MBE!

It has been a difficult, difficult year for all of us but here’s ending 2023 with the news of our town’s Nu Khumi Tonsing Burton being selected in the King’s New Year Honours List 2024 as Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE). Nu Khumi will now be Khumi Tonsing Burton, MBE, JP, DL.

Nu Khumi was JP (Justice of the Peace- akin to Magistrate) in Manchester for 20 years.

She was appointed DL (Deputy Lieutenant) in 2003 and represented the Queen through the Lord Lieutenant of a county.

What an honour. A recognition of her selfless work and commitment to the community in her county. She’s also been active in fundraising and other social engagements in India, including in her hometown Lamka.

We are so proud of you Nu Khumi. What a way to honour your birthplace, your community and your town.

Needless to say, women leading the way in making all of us in and from Lamka proud. May you continue to shine.
