Karingamanna, a leading aristocratic family in South Malabar has a past that dates back 500 years. The members of the family who were experts in the traditional Kerala martial arts, moved from the erstwhile British North Malabar to South Malabar following the instructions of Zamorin, the ruler of Kozhikode. Zamorin’s instructions came in the wake of a request from Azhavanchery Thambrakkal, the spiritual head of the Namboothiris(Brahmins) of Kerala whose ‘Mana’(Traditional residence) is situated in South Malabar (Just a few miles from the Karingamanna Heritage Homes). The mission entrusted to Karingamanna family members was to give protection to the spiritual head, Azhavanchery Thambrakkal and establish law and order in the area. Success in their mission helped them establish their presence significantly in the area with large estates to their credit. Besides their acts of bravery, they were known for benevolence and social service. Staunch believers in ‘Sarva Dharma Maithri’ (Friendship of all Religions), they promoted communal harmony in the area. Scions of the family had illustrious careers and they served the society in various walks of life. A District Judge from the family had attended the coronation of the British King George VI on official invitation.
