Under the leadership of Vedic Acharya Acharyasri Rajesh, the Kasyapa Veda Research Foundation is organizing Athirathram from April 17 to 26. For the first time in history, Athirathram is being conducted in Kozhikode. The ritual will take place at Kakkodi Veda Mahamandiram.
Athirathram is one of the most important and longest among the Srauta Yagas. In 2014, Kasyapashramam organized the Agnishtoma Somayaga on a grand scale with the participation of around 1.35 million people. Athirathram is performed after Agnishtoma. Since the Soma Yajna rituals that begin during the day continue through the night and extend into the next day, the name Athirathram comes from the meaning “that which crosses the night.”
The primary purpose of all Dravya Yajnas, including Athirathram, is the re-enactment of the process of cosmic creation. In addition, imparting spiritual knowledge is also one of the purposes of this Yaga. Beyond this, scriptures mention numerous benefits of Athirathram, including restoring the rhythm of nature, attaining spiritual elevation, and reviving social harmony. Entry will be open to all regardless of caste or gender. As part of the Yaga tradition, the historical development of mathematics and astronomy in India will be exhibited at the Yaga venue. The entire Athirathram will also be documented on video and preserved in a manner useful for research.
