In year 1992, it was a big challenge to work for Mentally Re****ed and Cerebral Palsy persons, because of non-availability of Indian Act, limited awareness, less support from government of India and even from the society at large . To take on this challenge Mr.Vasant Thakar took the premature retirement from his assignment and he started working for Mentally Re****ed and Cerebral Palsy individuals
from his own bungalow in the year 1992. Prabha Thakar decided to setup SAVALI a best institution for the care of the Mentally Re****ed and Cerebral Palsy individuals. SAVALI – A Shelter for Care has been planned for lifelong care in Sylvan, comforting surroundings with accommodation and modern facilities. They were trying to get land from government marked for the school/ social centre but all the efforts went to the dustbin . As they wanted to start the project as early as possible they have given up the follow up and donated their own plot to the institute in the prime location of Bhusari Colony, Kothrud, Pune. The institution has all necessary facilities and services under one roof. The Building of this institution was constructed in 1997 without any financial support from government. It was constructed with loan from the bank with a huge interest . After initial struggle SAVALI has proved to be the first organization in India for life-long care of Mentally Re****ed and Cerebral Palsy individuals. This is the 1st barrier free building not only in Maharashtra but in India which was planned and was inaugurated in 1997 before any law or Act for the barrier free environment came in force. SAVALI institute is located at Kothrud – Pune and is having its own building of 8500sqft built up area. SAVALI has gained the trust and confidence of the parents, government institutes, well wishers and donors by its devotional work. The institute has received recognition from various Government and Non-Government organizations for its work. The institute has also received many awards including 5 National Awards.
