🌴 Tribal Coffee in Koraput: Mythbusters ☕️
When you think of tribal coffee from Koraput, you might picture thriving coffee farms, amidst lush hills, and vibrant communities prospering from producing high quality coffee. But here’s the truth: the picture isn’t as perfect as it is projected.
📷 These photos are one of many examples where govt. interventions have had the effect of creating market inefficiency instead of correcting market failure.
🏛️A few years ago, the problem of inadequate market access for tribal coffee growers was sought to be solved through a system where coffee fruits were bought by an agency for further value addition, marketing, and sale. This quick fix intervention would push the growers further down the value chain and create a (near-monopolistic) dependency on the said agency for procurement of its coffees.
💔 What happens when the agency fails to procure coffee fruits in a timely manner? Growers do not have the luxury of delaying harvesting beyond a particular time – overripened fruits will lead to quality deterioration and crop loss. Desperate to salvage the crop, with coffee fruits remaining unbought, the coffee growers from this small tribal hamlet, scrambled to borrow pulping machine from a neighbouring village and resorted to processing the fruits into raw coffees – which not only have a better shelf life but can secure higher earnings for the growers. Instead of supporting the efforts, the agency would refuse to buy the raw coffees which would remain unsold for over a year! By the time we received the news, the raw coffees (parchment and cherry) had suffered from significant quality deterioration in the form of fungal damage and blackened beans.
💪The thing about coffee value chain is that even low quality coffees have value that’s why we chose to step in. By facilitating procurement of the raw coffees, we’re not just supporting these marginal growers but respecting their stories of struggle and resilience!
A big shout out to for all their support in seeing this through.
