🌴 Tribal Coffee in Koraput: Mythbusters ☕️

When you think of tribal coffee from Koraput, you might picture thriving coffee farms, amidst lush hills, and vibrant communities prospering from producing high quality coffee. But here’s the truth: the picture isn’t as perfect as it is projected.

📷 These photos are one of many examples where govt. interventions have had the effect of creating market inefficiency instead of correcting market failure.

🏛️A few years ago, the problem of inadequate market access for tribal coffee growers was sought to be solved through a system where coffee fruits were bought by an agency for further value addition, marketing, and sale. This quick fix intervention would push the growers further down the value chain and create a (near-monopolistic) dependency on the said agency for procurement of its coffees.

💔 What happens when the agency fails to procure coffee fruits in a timely manner? Growers do not have the luxury of delaying harvesting beyond a particular time – overripened fruits will lead to quality deterioration and crop loss. Desperate to salvage the crop, with coffee fruits remaining unbought, the coffee growers from this small tribal hamlet, scrambled to borrow pulping machine from a neighbouring village and resorted to processing the fruits into raw coffees – which not only have a better shelf life but can secure higher earnings for the growers. Instead of supporting the efforts, the agency would refuse to buy the raw coffees which would remain unsold for over a year! By the time we received the news, the raw coffees (parchment and cherry) had suffered from significant quality deterioration in the form of fungal damage and blackened beans.

💪The thing about coffee value chain is that even low quality coffees have value that’s why we chose to step in. By facilitating procurement of the raw coffees, we’re not just supporting these marginal growers but respecting their stories of struggle and resilience!

A big shout out to for all their support in seeing this through.

☕🌧️ Unseasonal Rains are Brewing a Crisis for Coffee Growers 🌧️☕

This festive season, as we celebrate with cups of our favorite brew, let’s spare a thought for the hands that nurture every bean. Unseasonal rains in coffee-growing regions like Koraput have caused significant damage to coffee fruits, disrupting the delicate balance of nature and livelihoods.

The impact?

Direct losses: Damaged coffee fruits mean lower yields, reduced quality, challenges in drying coffees, and financial strain for growers.

Indirect losses: Increased costs for rehabilitation, risks to next season’s harvest, and long-term ecological challenges.

Behind every sip of coffee is the hard work of farmers whose resilience is now being tested. As a coffee community, it’s time to stand together:

If you are a coffee buyer / coffee roaster, check up on how the farms that you are supporting are doing. Understand their challenges and support the new crop in whichever way you can.

If you are a coffee processor / technical expert, share know how in how to process split, damaged and over-ripened beans for the growers to mitigate financial losses.

If you are a coffee consumer / cafe, choose sustainable coffee brands that truly support coffee growers, even during the hard times.

Let’s ensure that the story of coffee continues to be one of hope, sustainability, and shared responsibility. Together, we can make a difference.

Flagging off a new coffee value project on a caffeine high!

Earlier this month, we had the absolute pleasure of supporting _india as they formally announced the launch of Unnati Coffee: a project that seeks to generate sustainable livelihood for tribal coffee growers of Koraput district with the support of Coca Cola India Foundation. The project was launched by the Honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha in the presence of tribal coffee growers from Koraput as well as other stakeholders of the coffee ecosystem.

As a strategic partner, we will bring our value optimisation approach to the project that focuses on producing consistent, high quality specialty coffee lots catered to the specific requirement of coffee roasters in the domestic and international markets.

It was a privilege to have had the opportunity to provide a glimpse into the work we have been doing so far on the grand stage. The felicitation of baristas and home brewers by the Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister reflects our inclusive approach of taking all stakeholders together as develop the entire coffee ecosystem.

A special thanks to , , , for all the support.

We had an incredible opportunity to support IHM, Bhubaneswar in a coffee training programme specifically curated for children with special needs (deaf). Spread over 16 days, the programme took the enthusiastic learners on an intensive journey: from understanding coffee beans and their processing all the way to roasting and brewing on manual and espresso machines. We are extremely grateful to for this wonderful initiative and to the lively interpreters that made the sessions productive and fun. Of course, it would have not been possible without the support and contributions from , , and , a truly collaborative effort! We look forward to being part of more of these impactful programmes that seek to make the coffee value chain for inclusive.

Last month, we had the privilege to host some special guests who had travelled all the way from Japan to get a glimpse of what Koraput is brewing! The day long trip started with a leisurely stroll around accompanied by lively conversations about all things coffee. The trip would end with a brief visited to our coffee processing unit to showcase the meticulousness with which we handle our coffees.

A big thank you to for your patience and enthusiasm. We look forward to meeting you again!

Cheers to building more strong, meaningful relationships as we take our high quality coffees to newer destinations - where the coffee growers and their story are appreciated as much as the effort they put in to produce great coffees!
