A proud moment in my artistic journey. I am delighted to share that I have been selected for the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar – 2025 by Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi for Tholpavakoothu. My heartfelt gratitude to my gurus, family, friends, well-wishers, and everyone who supported and prayed for me. This honour belongs to all of you as well.

A Tholpavakoothu performance is the result of the collective effort and collaboration of many artists. Behind every successful performance lies immense hard work, dedication, and commitment. The artists perform for long hours behind the screen, often considering the heat and flames of the traditional oil lamps as flowers showering upon them. Such devotion to the art form is what keeps this centuries-old tradition alive. Their dedication, passion, and perseverance are the true reasons behind the success and beauty of every Tholpavakoothu performance.

Tholpavakoothu is a traditional shadow puppetry art form practiced by many dedicated artists. Most of them depend on other occupations for their livelihood while continuing to preserve this ancient cultural heritage.
This is Madhu, a disciple of K. Viswanatha Pulavar in the field of Tholpavakoothu. Today, he was overjoyed to see his face featured on the cover of the Yathra magazine. For an artist from a small village, such recognition brings immense pride and happiness.
Moments like these remind us that art is not just a profession or a tradition—it is a source of joy, identity, and inspiration. Only art can bring such priceless happiness and make years of dedication feel truly rewarding.

We are delighted and deeply honoured that Tholpavakoothu, Kerala's ancient shadow leather puppetry tradition, has been featured in the latest edition of Mathrubhumi Yathra Magazine.
The feature beautifully captures various dimensions of our living heritage, including the intricate leather puppets, the dedicated artists behind the screen, the traditional Koothumaadam (performance theatre), and the meticulous process of puppet making that has been preserved through generations.
Adding to our joy, the front cover photograph of the magazine showcases a captivating backstage moment from a Tholpavakoothu performance. It is truly a proud moment for all of us who continue to preserve and promote this unique ritual art form.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the editorial team of Mathrubhumi Yathra for highlighting the rich cultural legacy of Tholpavakoothu and bringing its beauty to a wider audience.
May this recognition inspire more people to discover, appreciate, and support Kerala's traditional performing arts.
