Save Chakkakomban β Protect Our Elephants
The recent death of a man in Chinnakanal is deeply tragic. Human life must always be protected. At the same time, capturing and relocating Chakkakomban should not be treated as the only solution to humanβelephant conflict.
Chinnakanal has already witnessed the relocation of Arikomban. Repeatedly removing elephants from their natural habitat may have long-term ecological and social consequences, particularly when adult male elephants are removed from a particular landscape.
Instead of simply relocating elephants, we must address the root causes of conflictβprotect elephant corridors, restore habitats, improve early-warning systems, strengthen Rapid Response Teams and ensure the safety of local communities.
Before relocating Chakkakomban, there must be a transparent scientific assessment of whether relocation is truly necessary and whether it will actually reduce conflict.
Chakkakomban is not merely a problem to be removed. He is part of our natural heritage.
Protect people. Protect elephants. Protect their habitat. Make relocation a last resort, not the first response.
