Celebrating Strength, Skill, and Determination ⚽🌿

DIKSHA recently organized a football tournament of 8 teams of girls and women at Ahmadpur, Birbhum. In this first ever tournament exclusively for girls and women in their
teens and twenties brought together young players from surrounding communities. A large number of the participants were Adivasi girls, whose enthusiasm and commitment made the event truly inspiring.

The tournament was held from 6th to 8th March, creating a vibrant space for teamwork, confidence building, and community participation. The matches were played with full competitive spirit, and the girls demonstrated remarkable stamina and discipline on the field.

A common myth often heard in many communities is that girls/women cannot play football beyond 20 minutes. However, this tournament powerfully challenged that belief. Each match consisted of two halves of 35 minutes, and the players competed with energy and determination throughout the game.

On 8th March, International Women’s Day, the tournament concluded with Bahiri Brajasundori Football Academy emerging as the champions. Their victory symbolized not only sporting excellence but also the growing strength and visibility of girls in sports. It was a special moment for DIKSHA, too, as they are a DIKSHA supported team: we offer some financial support for their football kit and nutrition.

Through initiatives like this, DIKSHA continues to encourage young girls to participate in sports, challenge stereotypes, and build confidence and leadership within their communities.

👏 Congratulations to all the teams and players who made this event memorable!

Like every year, Nandalal Jew Road Anath Sewa Samity organised their Sri Sri Sh*tala Matar Puja 2025 in the Lakar Math area. DIKSHA was invited by the organisers to anchor the programme, and also present some performances by their children. In addition, DIKSHA donated crayon sets for all the participants in their Sit and Draw competition. Here are some of the glimpses from those events.

Birbhum is a district with an almost 50% underage marriage rate for girls, as per NFHS-5. Some girls and young women in their teens and 20s, mostly from tribal communities, fight against multidimensional socioeconomic odds and resistance to keep their dream of playing football alive. We at DIKSHA (Diksha) offer two such teams whatever support we can with generous donations from DIKSHA Dosts (Friends). But that's not enough to organise a tournament of 6-8 women's football teams hidden in different villages of the district. But a tournament is a must if we dream of pushing for a women's football team in Birbhum, which we do.

So friends, please dare to care: donate to make this tournament possible. If you are an Indian citizen, you'll get tax benefits because of our 80G certification. Help the almost-invisible Football Girls advance. Simply click the link below:

DIKSHA, born from an experiment started in 1999, and registered as a Public Charitable Trust in 2002, empowers young people from marginalised backgrounds through education, gender awareness, and sports. Its Life Unlimited: Sports for Change initiative fosters confidence and leadership in tribal girls through football in the Birbhum district of West Bengal.

The DIKSHA-Ahmadpur Invitational Women’s Football Tournament 2025, happening on 22nd or 23rd March in Ahmadpur Village (Sainthia Block, Birbhum District), West Bengal, will bring together 6–8 teams of tribal girls aged 10–25. More than just a game, it challenges stereotypes and promotes gender equality.

With a goal of raising ₹2,50,000, DIKSHA seeks support to make this dream a reality. Every donation matters—let’s create lasting change through football!

Every Young Voice Counts

DIKSHA dreams of a world where every child has a voice: they are enabled to speak out their issues and concerns and adults have learnt to provide safe spaces to young people to be taken seriously. The poster above is a demonstration of how we nurture our young participants to have the confidence to voice out their own issues, life-stories and great stories of hope and change through their own creative expressions. Our young champions have taken many great steps to make their own neighbourhoods safe for themselves. Every day - there’s a new change story from one of our changemakers. We’ll be sharing these stories with you in this space. Keep checking!
