🌧️🎶 When the rains become music, and music becomes memory…

Our Megh Malhar evening at Goppo Bari was one of those intimate gatherings that linger long after the last note has faded.

We were transported by a soulful sitar recital by Pundit Partha Pratim Roy accompanied on tabla by Raghunath Bhattacharyya.

There followed a warm goppo with our wonderful hostess, Paramita Biswas who suggested various songs based on the raga. That's what makes a Goppo Bari adda special.

The baithak brought together a wonderfully eclectic group—artists, dancers, teachers, documentary filmmakers and friends from across the world. Our international guests, who have become regulars at Goppo Bari, keep returning for the conversations and, perhaps most of all, the feeling of being among friends. ❤️

And, of course, there was delicious light fare organised by Sreela Rao of The Food Storey - A unit of Cafe 23, much enjoyed by everyone.

Goppo Bari is also about keeping traditions alive. Paramitadi sells a small collection of beautiful Dasghara Dhaniakhali saris, supporting the weavers and bringing their craft to a wider audience. She is now working on an exciting new initiative—to introduce Dhaniakhali handwoven curtains, creating a new livelihood stream for the craft community.
✨ And the adda continues…

Our next evening, on 16 September, brings art and literature together, with author and visual artist Subrata Ghosh speaking about his Bengali book Mediterranean Light.

More details coming soon.

🇮🇳 Some invitations become memories. Some moments become stories.

On 15 August 2026, Rotarian Paramita Biswas was invited to speak at a thought-provoking Rotary Club debate: “79 years on, is the concept of freedom absolute or given in moderation?"

The occasion was about much more than a debate. It was the extraordinary privilege of being at Kolkata’s historic Town Hall on Independence Day, sharing the stage with an august gathering.

“To talk at the Town Hall in such august company on the 80th Independence Day was so very special. It felt unreal, honestly,” she shared.

And knowing her, it must have been an enriching experience for all, with plenty of her trademark free-flowing goppo and adda! ❤️

Our Goppo Bari Wednesday Adda group only wishes there had been a recording. We would have loved to hear those stories—and perhaps discover a little more of the magic that made that day so special.

Some memories deserve to be retold. 🇮🇳✨

When Dokra tells a story, everyone listens… and some of us take a piece of the story home!

Our Wednesday Adda at Goppo Bari with Ruby Palchoudhuri was a delightful journey into the world of Dokra, handicrafts, stories and serendipitous discoveries.

Rubydi’s fascinating talk on the Lost-Wax Technique of Dokra sparked plenty of conversation. She traced the technique’s journey from Benin in Africa, a revelation that particularly intrigued our friend from South Africa, who is now hoping to acquire a magnificent Nandi Bull inspired by Paramita Biswas’s personal collection—alas, one that wasn’t for sale! 😄

Sarah Yarrow was persuaded to go home with a charming Dokra elephant to commemorate World Elephant Day, while the beautiful fish forms from Odisha and West Bengal proved irresistible to many. Our youngest member of this wonderfully intergenerational adda, enthusiastically displayed the treasures to the gathering as I played the auctioneer and set prices on them, thanks to Google Lens! Sreela Rao, who had been expertly organising the prawns on toast while dancing attendance on our two hostesses, managed to bid for a one-legged dancing Ganesh and a delightful fish bowl. Even Paramita got a treasure chest! 🐘🐟🎨

Rita Bhimani and Rashi emerged as top bidders, cornering a gorgeous Radha-Krishna with attendants, a delicate jaali fish destined to become a neckpiece, and a Paan-dan fish that will soon be transformed into a rather fabulous ladies’ handbag.

Almost everyone—from Beijing to Ballygunge—took home Durga Puja greeting cards or Goppo Bari stationery.

It was an evening of handicraft, conversation, laughter, collecting and connections across generations and continents—exactly what a Goppo Bari adda should be.

Watch this space for the recording of Rubydi’s fascinating talk on the Lost-Wax Technique of Dokra.
