Bengal Heritage Dinner | Kolkata 🇮🇳🇬🇧

A warm evening of homecoming, conversation and shared pride as friends from London and Kolkata came together for the Bengal Heritage Dinner — made even more special by a delectable traditional Bengali dinner that perfectly captured the flavours of home.

Bengal Heritage Foundation shared highlights from a landmark year — from London Sharad Utsav and Fagun Fest in London, to heritage restoration in Bengal, Sundarbans education initiatives, and our award-winning Sharadiya Parboni.

Two engaging panel discussions anchored the evening:

UK–India FTA & Eastern India Opportunities
Featuring Ayan Ghosh (Founder, AetherIQ), Sambrita Das (Technology Advisory Leader, SAP UK) and Rohit Shaw (Content Creator & Influencer), moderated by Andrew Fleming (British Deputy High Commissioner).

Kolkata’s Heritage Advantage
Feautring Kamal Banerjee (ICOMOS), Sujaan Mukherjee (Birla Academy of Art & Culture), Medha Mallick (Founder, Making Calcutta Relevant Again), Sarbajit Mitra (St Xavier’s College, Kolkata) and Rangan Dutta (Travel Writer & Academic), moderated by Debanjan Chakraborti (Director – East & North East, British Council).

As Andrew Fleming noted, it’s now time to turn ideas into action — with 2026 offering immense promise for India–UK ties.

Grateful to our sponsors AMPL and RedoQ for their support.

An evening that truly captured the spirit of homecoming, dialogue, shared heritage — and great Bengali food. 🍽️

Bengal Heritage Foundation has always seen itself as a living bridge between India and the UK—one that enables meaningful people-to-people connections.

While the Indo-British Heritage Cup remains a key fixture in our annual calendar, what warmed our hearts most this year was the opportunity to support five Under-15 women cricketers from the Bengal team. Through a small but heartfelt gesture, we were able to equip them with full cricket kits, supporting them at a crucial stage of their journey.

We are immensely grateful to the Cricket Association of Bengal and Jhulan Goswami for identifying and selecting these talented young cricketers—Ariktha Manna, Debosmita Kalsa, Radhika Kumari, Saikh Athiana, and Sneha Mahato. We wish them a brilliant future and look forward to seeing them shine on the national and international stage.

Bengal Heritage Foundation is proud to be associated with Shabdakalpa - a digital historical dictionary of Bengalithat will document the evolution of the Bengali language, offering valuable insights into its linguistic development. This ambitious project seeks to create a comprehensive record of the history of the Bengali language, word by word (similar to the The Oxford English Dictionary).

The project is being led by Subha Chaudhuri, Subha Chakraborty Dasgupta, Abhijit Gupta and is under the aegis of the School of Cultural Texts and Records, Jadavpur University

BHF are helping the project by coordinating the digitisation of some very early Bangla printed material that is currently only held at the British Library in London. These are the Bengali Translations of the East India Company Regulations that were printed between 1793 and 1800. The document is in 3 volumes of a total of about 2000 pages. For the Shabdakalpa Team to be able to work on this material we need to photograph these pages using normal mobile phones and upload the the images to an online drive. BHF has already shared some sample images and the Shabdakalpa team have confirmed that the quality is suitable for digitisation.

We are now looking for volunteers who would be willing to spend a day at the British Library to assist with this effort. If you are interested in this project, please message us on Facebook or email [email protected]. Ideally you would be based in London and have a British Library Reader Pass. If you are interested but do not have a BL pass, we can help you obtain one.

You can read more about the Shabdakalpa project at: https://shabdakalpa.com/

The Shabdakalpa team has also made this Youtube video about the project along with some interesting stories of word origins: https://youtu.be/QfP_6-M5OcI
