I was born and brought up in Proper Calcutta - North Calcutta (Dorjipara). From my childhood, there is a love relation with this city. The city which is popular by the name of ‘City of Joy’ or ‘Tilottama’. When I was in standard 5th, preparing for the last Examination, one cold morning I got to know that my favourite city’s name got changed to Kolkata. On the 1st of January 2001, the West Bengal C
hief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya announced that the State Capital 'Calcutta' has been officially renamed 'Kolkata'. Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said that all official communications would now carry the new name - with effect from January 1, 2001. Earlier, the CM, reacting to the Central Government's decision to accept the State's proposal to rename Calcutta, greeted the residents of the city, saying: "Kolkata has returned to Kolkata!” That was a shock to me. More than 2 years I am working in old Calcutta. I am searching for information, interesting topics about Kolkata. Still I don’t know what the reason behind this name change is. I don’t know why Kolkata, why not Kolikata. Maybe my knowledge is very less to understand this topic. Now I am trying to make this page as a platform where we will discuss the interesting topics about OLD TILOTTAMA. I learnt one phrase in my childhood that “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY” same like that “TILE TILE TILOTTAMA”. This Calcutta was not built in one day. Neither Job Charnock nor by an Indian builds this city. This city had built-in its own way. We will discuss
