Imagine a bird walking across the golden grasslands of Rajasthan.

Tall. Quiet. Remarkably adapted to the open landscape.

For centuries, the Great Indian Bustard was a part of Indiaโ€™s grassland ecosystems.

Then the landscape began to change.

Grasslands disappeared.

Habitats became fragmented.

And overhead power lines became invisible obstacles in the sky.

Slowly, the Great Indian Bustard began to disappear.

Today, only around 150 individuals are estimated to remain in the wild.

But the story does not end there.

Scientists and conservationists have been working to give this magnificent bird another chance. Eggs collected from the wild are being carefully incubated, chicks are being raised under controlled conditions, and captive-bred birds are now taking their first steps toward returning to the wild.

In October 2026, the first captive-bred Great Indian Bustards were released into the wild in Rajasthanโ€”a remarkable moment for one of India's most endangered birds.

But releasing a bird is only the beginning.

For the Great Indian Bustard to truly return, it needs something much bigger:

A landscape where it can live.

Grasslands where it can feed.

Space where it can breed.

And skies where it can fly safely.

Because saving the Great Indian Bustard isn't just about saving one bird.

It is about saving the grasslands, ecosystems and ecological heritage of India that have supported it for generations.

๐Ÿชฝ The question is no longer whether the Great Indian Bustard can come back.

The question is whether we can give it a landscape worth coming back to.

Natural nesting spaces are disappearing, but together, we can make a difference. In this World Habitat Day, we request you to come forward to support our mission. Sarisha Wildlife and Ecology Society (WNE India) has already successfully distributed over 500+ artificial nests to help sparrows, owls, and other cavity-nesting birds find a safe home.
Habitat means home. Letโ€™s give them a safe place to raise their young! ๐ŸŒฑ
Come forward to support our Artificial Nest Initiative.

For more than 8 years, ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐€๐ง๐ ๐„๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ (๐–๐๐„) has been working in the Ajodhya Hills, documenting and archiving the regionโ€™s geological and biodiversity heritage. Through our field-based work, we have been studying and recording the diverse rocks, soil formations, landforms, water systems, vegetation, wildlife and the ecological characteristics that make this landscape unique.

But geodiversity is not just about rocks.

It is the foundation upon which biodiversity develops.

The geology and geomorphology of a landscape influence its soils, water availability, vegetation and habitatsโ€”ultimately shaping the ecosystems in which wildlife and human communities survive and thrive. The relationship between geodiversity, biodiversity and local communities is therefore an important part of the story of Ajodhya Hills.

As part of our continued efforts to conserve and communicate this natural and cultural heritage, Wildlife And Ecology has recently established a

The museum brings together and exhibits elements of the regionโ€™s geological heritage, natural history, biodiversity and tribal cultural heritage, creating a space where visitors can better understand the landscape and the deep relationship between the land, its people and nature.

On International Geodiversity Day 2026, we invite everyone at our Tribal Museum at Ajodhya Johar Park.

Natural Guardians of Coastal Resilience

Mangroves are more than coastal forests โ€” they are natural shields against erosion, flooding, storm surges and climate impacts, while providing critical habitat for diverse wildlife.

Join us for an engaging webinar exploring the ecological importance of the mangroves of Vypin Island, Kerala, their role in coastal resilience, and the challenges they face.

A full-grown male elephant was found dead on 2 October 2026 in Nodhabari, Rajganj, Jalpaiguri, near the Baikunthapur forest landscape.
The elephant was found near an agricultural/tea-garden area with barbed/blade-wire fencing. Injury and burn marks were reportedly observed, while an electrical wire was found near the carcass.
The Forest Department initially suspected electrocution, allegedly involving an electrically charged fence. The Forest Department, police and Electricity Department are investigating the incident, while the post-mortem is required to confirm the exact cause of death.
๐ŸŒฟ Protecting crops should never mean creating a death trap for wildlife.
Safe fencing, responsible crop-protection measures and effective enforcement are essential for humanโ€“elephant coexistence.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ WORLD WILDLIFE WEEK | 1โ€“7 OCTOBER ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒฟ

Wildlife Needs More Than a Week. It Needs Our Commitment.

Wildlife is not just about rare species or protected forests. It is about the delicate web of life that connects forests, rivers, grasslands, wetlands, oceans and communities.

From the smallest insects to the largest elephants, every species plays a role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Yet habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, humanโ€“wildlife conflict, pollution, climate change and unsustainable exploitation continue to put wildlife under pressure.

This World Wildlife Week, let us look beyond admiration and take meaningful action:

๐ŸŒณ Protect habitats and wildlife corridors
๐Ÿ˜ Promote coexistence between people and wildlife
๐Ÿฆ‰ Support conservation and species monitoring
๐Ÿšซ Say no to illegal wildlife trade
๐ŸŒฑ Choose sustainable practices
๐Ÿ“š Create awareness and inspire the next generation

At WNE India, we believe conservation works best when science, technology, communities and action come together.

This week, let us celebrate wildlifeโ€”not only through photographs and stories, but by protecting the ecosystems that allow wildlife to thrive.

Because protecting wildlife means protecting the life-support systems we all depend on.

๐Ÿพ Celebrate Wildlife. Protect Nature. Be a Voice for the Wild.

On 21 September 2026, our team responded to a crocodile rescue call at Jawรกi Bandh, Rajasthan. The crocodile was safely retrieved from the water and transported to the Forest Department for further care and appropriate action.

Every rescue is a reminder that humanโ€“wildlife coexistence begins with timely response, compassion and responsible conservation. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŠ
