Nurturing Healthy Beginnings: Breastfeeding Awareness Week

On 5th August 2026, the Suroksh*t Shaishav Project observed World Breastfeeding Week through an awareness programme at an ICDS Centre in Itinda village. The session was graced by Ms. Srirupa Banerjee, Child Development Officer, Basirhat-I Block, along with Anganwadi workers, health workers, NGO representatives, mothers, and young children.

The programme highlighted the importance of early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, the benefits of colostrum, continued breastfeeding up to two years, and safe breast milk practices. An interactive quiz helped dispel common myths, empowering mothers with knowledge to ensure healthier beginnings for their children.

Exploring Opportunities: Beauty Trainees Visit Industry Expo

On 4th August 2026, eight underprivileged trainees from KMWSC's Skill Development Programme participated in an exposure visit to the Beautech Cosmetic & Salon Expo at the Biswa Bangla Exhibition Centre. For many, it was their first opportunity to experience a professional beauty industry exhibition.

The visit introduced the trainees to the latest beauty products, techniques, and emerging industry trends while broadening their understanding of career opportunities in the beauty and wellness sector. The enriching experience inspired the participants to enhance their skills, boost their confidence, and pursue sustainable livelihood opportunities with renewed enthusiasm.

United Against Human Trafficking: Communities Taking a Stand

On 30th July 2026, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC) observed the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons across multiple projects and locations under this year’s global theme "Trapped Behind the Scam." Awareness programmes were organised by the TCDEP Project in Gangasagar, the Skill Development Project in Kolkata, the Climate Action & Biodiversity (CAB) Project in Gosaba, Sundarban, the Suroksh*t Shaishav Project across Basirhat, Itinda, and Gacha-Akharpur, the Anti-Human Trafficking (AHT) & LES Projects in Basirhat, and the Silver Lining Project in Madhavpur, Baruipur. Through rallies, street awareness, cultural performances, discussions on cyber safety and child protection, and partnerships with BSF, Police, RPF, Panchayats, schools, and community members, KMWSC reaffirmed its collective commitment to preventing trafficking and protecting every child's right to a safe and dignified future.

On 30th July 2026, Loreto College, Kolkata hosted a powerful Awareness Programme in observance of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Organised by the Departments of Human Rights and Sociology, in collaboration with the Community Service Centre and Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre, the event brought together students, faculty, and experts for a thought-provoking panel discussion. 🎙️

Panelists Sudhanya Roy Chowdhury, Nabanita Shome, and Anwesha Banerjee, moderated by Meghjit Sengupta, explored anti-trafficking strategies and human rights protections aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Building Inclusive Communities for Every Child

On 28th July 2026, the Prerona Project organised an awareness campaign for stakeholders to promote the rights, inclusion, and wellbeing of specially-abled children. The programme brought together Gram Panchayat representatives, school teachers, health workers, ASHA workers, civic volunteers, parents of children with disabilities, and community members.

The session highlighted the importance of early identification, inclusive education, access to government schemes, child protection, and collaborative community support. Through active discussions, participants reaffirmed their commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every specially-abled child can grow, learn, and thrive with dignity.

Empowering Young Leaders for Child Protection

On 27th July 2026, the Kolkata Slums Project organised an Adolescent Revamp Training at New Alipore, engaging 21 children and adolescents. The programme focused on key child protection issues, including child marriage, child labour, cyber safety, the Right to Education (RTE) Act, and the POCSO Act.

Through interactive discussions, beneficiary interactions, and a short role play presented by the participants, the children showcased their learning and understanding of child rights. The programme concluded with a meeting of the Child Club members, reinforcing their role as young advocates for creating safer and more protective communities.

🌿 Rooted in Purpose: Protecting the Mangroves of the Sundarbans

On 23rd, 25th, and 26th July 2026, the Climate Action and Biodiversity (CAB) Project observed the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem through a three-day awareness drive at Bipradaspur village in the Sundarbans, engaging 131 community members.

Through interactive discussions and awareness sessions, participants explored the vital role of mangroves in protecting coastlines, preserving biodiversity, and combating climate change. The programme also highlighted the growing threat of plastic pollution and encouraged communities to adopt sustainable practices to safeguard these fragile ecosystems for future generations.

United for Child Protection: Strengthening Partnerships Against Trafficking

On 23rd July 2026, Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), under the Anti-Human Trafficking (AHT) Project, collaborated with the 148 BSF Battalion, local police, and schools to conduct a child protection awareness programme at Hakimpur High School, Basirhat, reaching 100 students.

The session focused on child trafficking, child protection, and the importance of collective vigilance. Through interactive discussions, participants learned about trafficking risks, preventive measures, and the value of timely reporting. The initiative strengthened collaboration among key stakeholders, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting vulnerable children and creating safer communities.
