Inspiring stories from our Prison Ministry that spark hope and transformation.
As we stepped out of the vehicle at 10:15 am, the imposing walls of the prison loomed before us. We crossed the first locked gate, signed the register, and were escorted by a lady constable and Officer-in-charge through the main gate. The sound of clanging metal and the hum of conversation filled the air as we made our way to the designated building.
Inside, the inmates were waiting to greet us, their faces lighting up with smiles. We were ushered to a simple room, where we spent the next couple of hours sharing stories, laughter, and hope. The Catholic young boy from the kitchen was already there, waiting to touch our feet, but I gently offered my hand instead, and he smiled, understanding.
As we taught and shared, I glanced around the room, seeing the faces of men who had made mistakes, but were hungry for redemption. We didn't just teach them about God; we showed them love, compassion, and respect. And in return, they shared their stories, struggles, and hopes.
But it was on our way out that something remarkable happened. A man approached us, his eyes shining with tears, and asked to touch our feet. I was taken aback, but as he began to speak, his words pierced my heart. He told us about his time in prison, about the classes we had taught, and how they had touched his life. He spoke of his desire to turn his life around, to live according to God's will.
In that moment, I realized that we weren't just visitors; we were messengers of hope. We were reminders that even in the darkest places, God's love shines bright. As we prayed for him, I felt a sense of awe at the privilege of serving in this way.
Leaving the prison, I couldn't help but think about the thousands of men behind those walls, each with their own story, their own struggles. But I knew that we would be back, bringing hope, love, and compassion to those who need it most. For in serving them, we serve God Himself.
The experience was a poignant reminder that we are all on a journey, and that sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear, a compassionate heart, and a gentle touch to change the course of someone's life.
