14th April Programme

On 14th April 2026, at Penchara village, our organization Baranagar Swapnaloke for Humanity with Humanity completed 11 years of its journey.

On this very day in 2009, our work began on the streets of Kolkata with just six underprivileged street children and two children from slum communities, through the Maa Sarada Pother Alo Project and the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Educational Help Project. Remembering that humble beginning, we organised a small cultural programme this year as well, continuing our annual tradition.

For the past few years, this programme has been held not in Kolkata, but in Penchara village of Purulia. The journey from the city streets of Kolkata to this remote village has never been easy. Yet, being able to carry forward that initial spirit of service with dedication even today feels like a true blessing.

Students from both Penchara and Bonkanali villages participated in the programme. Children from nearby 6–7 villages, who come to us regularly to learn drawing, dance, and other activities, also took part with great enthusiasm. The programme concluded with the distribution of special tiffin among all the participants.

Such cultural gatherings hold a deeper significance beyond celebration. For these children, it is not just a stage, but a space where they learn confidence, expression, and a sense of belonging. It brings together children from different villages, nurtures creativity, and strengthens the bond of a shared learning community. In places where opportunities are limited, these moments of joy, participation, and recognition become an important part of their growth and self-belief.

The Learning Journey of Sabor Tribal Children | Swapnaloke Sabujangan Vidyalaya, Bonkanali, Purulia | Part 4 – Preparing for Examinations

The children of Bonkanali began their learning journey at Swapnaloke Sabujangan Vidyalaya in January 2021. For most of them, it was their first experience of formal education, and many were learning the alphabet and numbers for the very first time. The video shared here was recorded around mid-2022, during the early phase of the school.

In the video, the children can be seen sitting in different corners of their surroundings, some under the shade of trees, some even perched on branches, quietly reading their books and preparing for their examinations. For many of them, the idea of studying for a test was once completely new.

These simple moments show an important change: the growing seriousness toward learning and the beginning of a sense of responsibility in their studies. The spirit of this journey continues among the children even today.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Educational Help Project (for underprivileged and rural children, especially girls) in Penchara village, Purulia, was started in April 2015 by BARANAGAR SWAPNALOKE FOR HUMANITY WITH HUMANITY.

In the initial years, members of the organization used to travel from Kolkata to Purulia every two months to continue the work. During those visits, it was often noticed that one or another girl student had already been married off at a very young age. Child marriage was widely prevalent there, often taking place even before the girls reached the age of 13–14.

While the work initially depended on visits from Kolkata every two months, it is now carried out regularly, with activities in the village and at the centre taking place every day.

Gradually, through Swapnaloke’s educational support and continuous awareness initiatives, a significant change began to take place. Now the girls receive books, notebooks, and other essential educational materials with the support of the organization, along with necessary assistance to continue their school and college education. Awareness among the parents has also increased.

As a result, the girls of Penchara village are now continuing their studies regularly. Many of them are progressing through school and college, and some are even reaching the university level. They receive the necessary books, notebooks, and other educational materials from the organization.

Have 8 minutes? Please take a moment to see how confidence slowly began to grow among the children as their learning journey continued.

The Learning Journey of Sabor Tribal Children | Swapnaloke Sabujangan Vidyalaya, Bonkanali, Purulia | Part 3 – Confidence and Expression

The children of Bonkanali began their learning journey at Swapnaloke Sabujangan Vidyalaya in January 2021. For most of them, it was their first experience of formal education, and many were learning the alphabet and numbers for the very first time. The videos shared here were recorded around mid-2022, during the early phase of the school, when the children had already begun taking their first confident steps in reading, writing, and classroom learning.

As the learning journey of the Sabor children of Bonkanali gradually moved forward, another important change began to appear alongside their academic progress: the emergence of confidence.

In the beginning, many of the children were very quiet. Everything around them was new, the environment, the people, and the experience of being in a school. Naturally, they often felt shy and hesitant to express themselves.

But slowly, with time, that hesitation began to fade.

Some children began to stand up and read aloud from their books. Others walked up to the blackboard and wrote letters and words in their own hands. Sometimes they learned together in small groups, helping one another understand lessons. Through these simple yet meaningful moments, learning was becoming more lively and engaging.

The classroom environment was also shaped in a way where making mistakes was never something to fear. Instead, trying, learning again, and supporting one another gradually helped the children build confidence in their abilities.

The moments captured in this video belong to that phase of the journey, a time when education was not confined to letters and numbers alone, but was slowly opening new paths of confidence and self-expression for every child.

In the small vegetable garden of Swapnaloke Sabujangan Vidyalaya (Free Residential School for Sabor Tribal Children) in Bonkanali village of Purulia, the students themselves dug the soil, planted seeds, and nurtured the saplings with their own hands. After some time, their effort bore fruit and okra plants grew, which the students happily harvested themselves.

This small initiative not only helps them build a close relationship with the soil but also guides them gradually towards the path of self-reliance. At the same time, it contributes, even if modestly, to meeting the daily food needs of the school.

Though the yield is still far from sufficient for the needs, the learning, effort, and joy behind it hold the promise of a stronger future.

Our little Sabor tribal student Jharna sings a beautiful Jhumur song in her natural, untrained voice. Her innocent melody carries the spirit of Purulia and the rich cultural roots of the Kurmi and Sabor communities.
