We have to reach every household in the village and bring them back to natural farming. If organic farming is our future, then we have no other option and we have been trying to do that for years.

We are indebted to Tithi Biswas for her significant contribution to the “Gacher Ashram” of Belgharia Nature Welfare Society. Tithi is a third year student of Presidency University, who has taken up an internship with our organization. During this time, she has identified over 150 trees of “Gacher Ashram”. Not only that, she has also submitted a report to us on the practical needs and medicinal properties of those trees. This work is very important to us. We thank you for being a change maker by supporting environmental conservation through identifying and planting endangered plants of Bengal.

,Malala Siddiquee, a student of Presidency University, completed her two-month internship with us. She identified 15 new species of trees in the “Tree Sanctuary” and arranged for their planting. These trees will increase the biodiversity of the “Tree Sanctuary”. We applaud her for this contribution in increasing biodiversity.

We are happy to inform you that the only tree sanctuary of Jangalmahal, “Gachher Ashram” , has been established (since 2020) in Santaldih village of Kantadi, Purulia, under the joint initiative of Belgharia Nature Welfare Society (regd. no. –S/1L/97331 of 2012-13) and Kestopur Rabindrapally Sangbedan (Regd. No. – SOOO7292) . Various environment-loving organizations and individuals of Bengal and the country have cooperated in establishing “Gachher Ashram”.

With the relentless efforts of these organizations for five years, the grey land of “Gachher Ashram” has now become green.

A total of 1000+ trees including 100+ native species of trees have already been placed in "Gacher Ashram". We have collected seeds and seedlings of 200+ more trees from different parts of Bengal and India. As a result, very soon "Gacher Ashram" will become a garden of 300+ native species of trees, which is rare in the bosom of “Jangalmahal”.

Apart from trees, a vast ecosystem including animals, birds, and insects has been developed around the "Gacher Ashram". The "Gacher Ashram" provides employment to the local residents.

The initiators of the "Gacher Ashram" are interested in making it a public and national asset rather than a private, group or organizational asset. The most important thing is that there is scope to develop 40-50 acres of green forest land in the "Gacher Ashram" and its surrounding land, and every organization and local residents involved in the Gacher Ashram are willing to provide all kinds of cooperation for it.

Therefore, we are drawing your attention so that the "Gacher Ashram" becomes a rare example of greenery in the rugged Purulia district; May the tree sanctuary bring endless benefits to plants, animals, insects, and humans, and may it become a great meeting place for students, environmentalists, and plant researchers centered around the "Gacher Ashram".

How can we make our cities more bird-friendly? 🦆

As we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, we list a few ways in which we can support migratory birds travelling through cities:
👉Minimise threats such as reducing light pollution during migration periods, which would prevent collisions
👉Adopt bird friendly practices such as providing birds with ample sources of food and water
👉Raise awareness about their importance to the health of the planet and its ecosystems
👉Foster community involvement and enable actions that the whole of society can take for migratory birds
👉Bring nature back into our cities and communities

Let us all play our part in supporting migratory birds!
