Varta Trust

Varta Trust Gender and sexuality dialogue through publishing, events, research, advocacy, training and referrals. Our Darpan registration number is WB/2025/0776829.

Varta Trust promotes dialogue and understanding on gender and sexuality as issues intimate and integral to human development in India. We look at gender and sexuality through the prism of intersections with age, class, caste, religion, race, marital status, geographical location, sexual and reproductive health, HIV, disability, mental health, education, livelihood, social security, environment and

human rights. Varta Trust aims to publish multi-format and mutli-lingual publications for mass audiences as platforms for dialogue on gender and sexuality. The “Varta” webzine (in a blog format till July 2016) is the first of these publications. Our publishing work is complemented by activities around awareness generation through public events, referrals to services, training, social research, and policy, legal, economic inclusion and media advocacy on gender and sexuality. Currently, a group of 31 people from the fields of journalism, social work, social and biomedical research, human rights and law, public health, academics, art, information technology, engineering, business, financial management and queer community mobilization forms the larger Varta team. As a registered trust, Varta is led by a five-member Board of Trustees consisting of Dr. Srabasti Majumdar (Chairperson), Pawan Dhall (Secretary and Managing Trustee), Kaushik Gupta (Treasurer), Madhuja Nandi, and Susanta Pramanik. The first meeting of Varta as a voluntary group was held on June 3, 2012 in Kolkata, and the “Varta” blog started on August 1, 2013. Varta was registered as a trust on May 14, 2014 with the ADSR Sealdah, District South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, with number IV - 00322 of 2014. June 13, 2026, Saturday, 2-8 pm. Pop in for a pop-up with deep roots in India’s recent q***r histories!

Varta’s 14th birthday pop-up aims to mark an initiative that started with a meeting of just a handful of people on June 3, 2012 who were keen to expand the dialogue on gender, sexuality and q***rness in new ways, beyond limited circles. All if it while remembering the past but also critiquing it and building on it.

What started as a monthly blog in August 2013 (“Varta”) has now grown into a gender and sexuality resource centre (Mon Bhalo Rakhar Thikana) started in December 2025.

At the forefront of the resource centre is a family of motivated young and old q***r-trans peer leaders, project staffers, organizational leaders and volunteers, webzine contributors, and resource persons with an amazing diversity of expertise.

Come, have a look at what we are attempting to take forward through Mon Bhalo Rakhar Thikana (Happy Mind, Happy Us)!

Detailed announcement and call for participation in the works!

Mon Bhalo Rakhar Thikana update!

Soon after busy March, April brought more learning, sharing, and community solidarity at Varta Trust’s gender and sexuality resource centre in Kasba, South Kolkata. The 15 Rainbow Wings peer leaders and several q***r-trans community members joined workshops and events that blended skill-building, creative expression, public health awareness, and legal empowerment.

A citizen journalism training on April 4-5, led by researcher Sayan Bhattacharya, introduced the peer leaders to the history of citizen journalism, ethical reporting, detecting fake news, understanding the implications of AI, and ways to document community stories.

Amidst uncertainty following the enactment of Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026, an art therapy workshop helmed by psychologist Suchetana Sengupta and Varta staffer Souvik Raksh*t offered a restorative space to explore emotions through painting. On April 9, we celebrated a book launch at Seagull Books of Pawan Dhall's new book "Unfinished Equality". A lively conversation ensued that underlined the need for q***r-trans movements to prioritize anti-discrimination efforts. A rally and street plays on April 15, the 12th anniversary of the apex court's NALSA ruling on trans rights, also reminded us that q***r and trans rights are far from secured.

A TB awareness meeting, led by Dr. Tirthankar Guha Thakurta, was held on April 18, covering TB prevention, symptoms to watch for, and steps to access testing and treatment. The session emphasized destigmatizing care and linking community members to local health services.

A legal aid training with advocates Kaushik Gupta and Srimoyee Mukherjee on April 25 equipped the participants with information about their rights and grievance redressal. This session also touched on the social security programmes for q***r-trans people in India.

In April, three Rainbow Wingers joined Varta staffers in providing mental health, legal aid, and education support to q***r-trans people in Greater Kolkata (beneficiary count around 30, resource centre footfall nearly 80 since Jan '26).
