Kolkata Sanved is a women-led pioneer in the field of dance movement therapy (DMT) for healing, empowerment & psycho-social rehabilitation of marginalised populations. We use DMT as a tool for promoting holistic well-being & enhancement of quality of life. Founded in 2004 by Ashoka Fellow Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, a sociologist and dance activist, Kolkata Sanved has expanded the notions of dance and t

raditional rehabilitation programs. Through our groundbreaking program, survivors of trafficking and violence release trauma, develop confidence and identify their own potentials as human beings rather than as victims. At its core, the program allows survivors to develop specific life-skills important for their reintegration through a non-threatening and culturally familiar medium.

We often think of healing as something that happens through thoughts, conversations, or understanding. But our bodies are part of the story too.
Stress, grief, fear, joy, and resilience are not only emotions we feel, they are experiences we carry in our bodies. Sometimes before we find the words, our bodies have already spoken through breath, posture, movement, tension, or stillness.
This is why embodied approaches matter.

Healing is not just about making sense of our experiences; it is also about reconnecting with ourselves, noticing what we carry, and creating space for release, expression, and restoration.

At Kolkata Sanved, Dance Movement Therapy invites us to listen not only with our minds, but with our whole selves.

What is your body telling you today? đź’

Rabindranath Tagore and Kaji Nazrul Islam— living in our thoughts, in our soul.

Rabindranath Tagore and Kaji Nazrul Islam continue to live in our thoughts and consciousness. The junior team of Kolkata Sanved organized a small, intimate gathering as a heartfelt celebration during our tea circle. Through dance, music, poetry, and conversation, we shared what we have learned from their creations—the understanding of life, humanity, love, the beauty of nature, and the depth of living. Their work still teaches us how to think, how to feel, and how to embrace equality. Their words continue to give us strength, inspiration, and most importantly, teach us to love humanity. This gathering was not just an event; it was a beautiful effort to express our respect for our culture, literature, and collective consciousness.

How do we create healthier, more reflective conversations around masculinity?

At the conference “Reframing Masculinities: Shifting Power for Gender Justice,” Kolkata Sanved joined practitioners, artists, and organisations exploring how sports, movement, and creative arts can become spaces for reflection, emotional expression, and transformation.

Through Dance Movement Therapy and creative practices, we continue to engage with questions of gender, body, emotions, and wellbeing — moving towards more compassionate and equitable ways of being.

Two days of reflection, movement, conversation, silence, creativity, and community.
This retreat was a reminder that growth often begins when we slow down enough to truly notice — ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
With gratitude to Outward Bound for holding this space with us.

This Rabindra Jayanti, we returned to one of Tagore’s simplest ideas, that nature can teach us how to learn, reflect, and connect.

Our staff retreat at Rabindra Sarobar reminded us that meaningful spaces do not need to be expensive. Sometimes, all we need is time, honesty, community, and the willingness to slow down together.
