SUPPORT FOR THE MIND - Iswar Sankalpa This quote sums up the reason why we do this work, and where we draw our passion from.

Iswar Sankalpa works towards upholding the rights and dignity of homeless and vulnerable persons with psychosocial disabilities in Kolkata, India through informed interventions and networks. "Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat."

~Mother Teresa

What began as the arrival of fifteen new residents at Pratyay unfolded into an afternoon of reconnection, celebration, and community. There were flowers and sandesh to mark the occasion, handshakes and introductions, old friends reuniting after years apart, music that invited people to sing and dance, and conversations shared over refreshments. Amidst the laughter and applause, residents settled into new spaces and familiar bonds were rediscovered.

At Pratyay, psychosocial rehabilitation is not only about support services; it is about creating environments where dignity, choice, companionship, and belonging can flourish. Because home is more than housing:it is being welcomed, being recognised, and finding community in one another.

At Marudyan, Sarbari and Pratyay, moments of care often emerge quietly : in shared drinks, familiar company, a hand held, hair gently combed, or simply sitting together.
These shelter homes hold stories that are easy to overlook if we only search for transformation in dramatic moments. Sometimes, care is built through repetition, trust, and presence. Through everyday gestures that say: I see you. I am here.
This photographic session captured fragments of that quiet companionship among shelter clients - reminding us that community is often built in the smallest of ways.

Mental health is often surrounded by myths that shape stigma, exclusion, and misunderstanding. In our work in community mental health, we have learned that many assumptions about psychosocial disabilities are deeply rooted in misinformation rather than lived reality.

At Iswar Sankalpa, we witness every day how dignity, care, rehabilitation, community support, and opportunities can transform lives. From vocational training and creative expression to recovery with dignity and community based care, our work continues to challenge the stereotypes often associated with mental health conditions.

This post is an invitation to pause, unlearn, and rethink some of the myths we continue to hear about mental health and psychosocial disabilities. Because people are always more than assumptions, and recovery is always more possible than stigma allows us to imagine.

Putul Sajano: Where nostalgia meets nature. 🌸🌿

Sarbari girls indulged into an alternative therapy inspired group session today :

“Ei putul ta ke jama poriye debo fuul diye, choto belay erom putul kheltam,” Radha said.

As our residents carefully arranged the vibrant petals on their cardboard frame, the terrace filled with the quiet, soothing magic of nostalgia. Our latest creative session was inspired by the innocent joy of putul sajano (dressing up dolls), trading store-bought outfits for nature’s own wardrobe.

Using simple cardboard cutouts, a bit of clear tape, and fresh blooms from our surroundings, we didn’t just make art—we wove our childhood memories into a living canvas. There’s is something profoundly meditative about this ephemeral process: finding the perfect leaf for a collar or a bright flower for a dress, adorning the hair or even a bag with flowers and leaves. It’s a gentle reminder that creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about the joy of play and seeing the beauty in the temporary.

হাট was more than a celebration, it was a coming together of community, care, creativity, and connection.

As part of Sarbari’s Foundation Day, we asked people what they experienced, felt, and carried back from the day. Here are some moments, memories, and reflections from everyone who made the day so special!

At Iswar Sankalpa, safeguarding is not just about compliance — it is about building spaces rooted in dignity, accountability, care, and safety.

As a POSH-compliant and safeguarding-compliant organisation, we are committed to ensuring that vulnerable groups are protected from harm, abuse, exploitation, neglect, and harassment in all forms. Through trainings, awareness sessions, internal committees, visitor protocols, and accessible reporting systems, we continue working towards creating safer and more inclusive environments for everyone we engage with.

We believe that “Do No Harm” is a collective responsibility shared by staff, volunteers, visitors, and stakeholders alike.

Because every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and heard.
