From November 2025 to April 2026, Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), under the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), conducted a migratory bird monitoring programme at Deepor Beel, Assam, with the active participation of local youth groups and students.

Through field surveys, hands-on training, and citizen science initiatives, participants strengthened their skills in bird identification, biodiversity monitoring through online portals such as eBird, India Biodiversity Portals etc.and conservation documentation. The programme documented 108 bird species, including 42 winter migratory species, highlighting the ecological importance of Deepor Beel as a vital wetland habitat.

Together, we are fostering community-led conservation and generating valuable data for the long-term protection of biodiversity.

As part of the IKI-LLBCP initiative, the NEWS Guwahati team conducted a series of hands-on demonstrations from November 2025 to January 2026 on the preparation and application of Jeevaamrit, a traditional natural nutrient enhancer, among farmers around Deepor Beel.

The sessions introduced biodiversity-friendly farming practices and highlighted the benefits of Jeevaamrit in improving soil health, enhancing nutrient availability, and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. Farmers also participated in discussions on the environmental and health impacts of excessive chemical inputs and explored sustainable alternatives for long-term agricultural productivity.

By promoting eco-friendly farming practices, the initiative is supporting healthier soils, resilient livelihoods, and the conservation of the Deepor Beel wetland ecosystem, helping agriculture and biodiversity thrive together.

Crocodiles have inhabited our planet for over 200 million years, surviving dramatic environmental changes and continuing to play a vital role in maintaining the health of wetlands, rivers, lakes, and mangrove ecosystems.

While conservation efforts have helped several crocodile populations recover, habitat degradation, pollution, and increasing human-wildlife interactions continue to pose significant challenges.

On World Crocodile Day, let us recognise the ecological importance of these remarkable reptiles and strengthen our commitment to conserving the wetlands and waterways they call home.

Sea turtles have navigated our oceans for over 100 million years, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. From sustaining seagrass meadows and coral reefs to supporting coastal biodiversity, these ancient mariners are indispensable guardians of ocean health.

Yet today, sea turtles face growing threats from marine pollution, bycatch, habitat degradation, climate change, and human disturbance. Their survival is closely linked to the health of our oceansโ€”and ultimately, to our own future.

This World Sea Turtle Day, let us celebrate these remarkable creatures and renew our commitment to protecting the habitats they depend on. Through conservation, sustainable practices, community stewardship, and awareness, we can help ensure that sea turtles continue to thrive in our seas for generations to come.

๐ŸŒŠ Every turtle saved is a step toward healthier oceans.
๐Ÿข Protect their journey. Preserve our marine heritage.

On 13 June 2026, Principal Secretary, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Smt. V. Hekali Jimomi, visited the Tharu-dominated village of Bishunapur to interact with the dedicated Gajmitras working on the frontline of human-elephant conflict mitigation. The visit was also attended by PCCF (Wildlife), Ms Anuradha Vimuri.

The Gajmitra team, formed and supported by NEWS, has been playing a pivotal role in promoting coexistence between people and elephants by strengthening early warning systems, community vigilance, and conflict response mechanisms. Their impactful work recently received national recognition when Honourable Prime Minister of India- Narendra Modi highlighted the Gajmitra initiative in his Mann Ki Baat programme.

In recognition of their outstanding contribution to conservation and community safety, the Gajmitras were felicitated by the Principal Secretary on 14 June 2026 at the Eco Awareness Centre in Katarniaghat. The occasion celebrated the power of community-led conservation and the growing success of the Gajmitra model in reducing human-elephant conflict across the Terai-Arc landscape.

For over 25 years, the International Living Lakes Conference serves as a platform for connecting people, ideas, and action across continents in support of lakes, wetlands, and freshwater ecosystems. From South Africa in 1998 to Lake Titicaca, Peru in 2022 the conference has fostered lasting partnerships, knowledge exchange, and collective efforts for freshwater conservation.
As the journey continues to India for the 17th Living Lakes Conference in Kolkata and the Sundarban, we celebrate this enduring legacy and the many individuals and organizations that continue to propel it forward.
Participation is by invitation only.

To mark World Environment Day 2026, Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) organized Energy Audit Programmes at four schools across South and North 24 Parganas, with support from Axis Bank Limited and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL).

Through hands-on energy audits, students surveyed electrical appliances across their campuses for electricity consumption, and identified energy conservation measures. The audits revealed that ceiling fans were the most common appliances and accounted for a maximum share of electricity consumption across all schools. At Radhakanta Academy High School, students documented 92 electrical appliances with estimated electricity consumption of 755.88 kWh per month. G-Plot Vivekananda Vidyamandir recorded 84 appliances, consuming an estimated 602.2 kWh per month. At Ramchaki Free Primary School, students identified 20 appliances with an estimated annual electricity consumption of 181.104 kWh per month. Amritanagar High School recorded the highest number of appliances (139), with ceiling fans accounting for 37.4% of the total inventory.

Based on their findings, students recommended replacing conventional tube lights with LED lighting, installing energy-efficient fans, switching off appliances when not in use, and increasing the use of solar energy. The programme empowered students to become active contributors to energy conservation and sustainability within their schools and communities.

Under the SBIF LEAP โ€“ Climate Smart Livelihoods Project, supported by SBI Foundation and implemented by Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), a High Nectar & Pollen Plantation Drive was organized at Hingalganj Block, North 24 Parganas on World Environment Day 2026.

As part of the Sustainable Beekeeping intervention, project-supported households who will undertake beekeeping activities planted a variety of nectar- and pollen-rich species within their homestead lands for development of bee-friendly micro habitats. These plantations are expected to strengthen year-round floral resource availability for honey bees, reduce seasonal forage scarcity, improve colony health, enhance pollination services, and support sustainable honey production.

The initiative represents an important step towards building climate-resilient and biodiversity-friendly livelihood systems in the vulnerable coastal landscape of the Sundarbans. By integrating pollinator-supportive plantation with livelihood development, the project aims to promote long-term ecological sustainability alongside improved rural income opportunities.

NEWS successfully conducted a hands-on training on mushroom cultivation on 30 May 2026 at Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark. The session was facilitated by Prof. (Dr.) Umesh Thapa, Department of Vegetable Science, Faculty of Horticulture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, who shared practical and scientific insights into mushroom farming as a low-cost, nutrition-rich, and income-generating livelihood option.

Participants learned about edible mushroom varieties, substrate selection, bag preparation, environmental management, disease prevention, harvesting techniques, seasonal cultivation, and post-harvest practices. The training demonstrated how mushroom farming can be successfully adopted at the household level with minimal land and investment, while enhancing nutrition and creating additional income opportunities.

The interactive session inspired participants to explore climate-smart and sustainable livelihood practices that contribute to community resilience and economic empowerment.
