A drink of clean water after a proper meal, something so basic, yet so rare for the horses at the Maidan.

These animals are often left tied in the blazing sun for hours, with little to no access to clean drinking water. The existing water sources are filthy, stagnant, filled with debris, and breeding mosquitoes. Despite this, there is little effort from caregivers to clean or maintain them.

We ensured these horses receive a proper meal and clean water.

This is not charity. This is the bare minimum they deserve.

Here are pictures showing before and after CAPE Foundation’s intervention with the horses of the Victoria Maidan.

Why did CAPE step in, despite the enormous costs involved?

This was the condition in which we found these horses before initiating our intervention and filing a PIL before the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta.

Even after 3 years, the State of West Bengal is yet to file its response.

While awaiting a final judgment, we could not stand by and watch their suffering any longer.

Our intervention began with filing FIRs against negligent owners and caregivers, alongside rescuing horses that were visibly malnourished and injured.

The reality is that maintaining a horse with proper nutrition, medical care, and grooming is expensive, and most caregivers are either unwilling or unable to bear these costs.

That is where CAPE Foundation stepped in.

What started as an urgent response has now become a sustained effort, our weekly Wednesday feeding and grooming camps, ensuring these horses receive the care, dignity, and nourishment they deserve.

After a hard-fought legal battle, justice has finally begun to prevail.
Following our significant victory in the Hon’ble Supreme Court, where the SLP challenging the order of the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta was dismissed, directions were upheld for the return of the three elephants illegally taken out of West Bengal. The Hon’ble Court also took serious note of the West Bengal Forest Department’s non-compliance, even initiating contempt proceedings.
Today marks a crucial step forward.
Bhola and Basanti have finally been seized by the Bihar Forest Department.
This moment comes with mixed emotions. While we are relieved that two of them are now on the path back home, we carry deep sorrow for Suman, whom we tragically lost along the way—a loss that should never have happened.
Now begins the next critical phase: ensuring Bhola and Basanti’s safe, stress-free journey back to West Bengal, where they rightfully belong.
We remain committed to seeing this through—until they are home, safe, and protected.

Foot care is one of the most critical aspects of equine health.... no hoof, no horse.
A thorough inspection at the Maidan revealed that nearly all the equines suffer from poor hoof condition, many with severe infections and even maggot infestations due to neglect and lack of awareness.

CAPE Foundation is working closely with caregivers to change this reality. Through regular camps and hands-on demonstrations, we are ensuring they understand the importance of daily hoof cleaning, timely trimming, and proper grooming.

By building this awareness and accountability, we aim to prevent unnecessary suffering and improve the overall health and well-being of these horses.

Here are some before and after pictures of hoof maintenance...
