When communities lead, sustainable livelihoods flourish.

In the Kumai Tea Garden area of Kalimpong, two Self-Help Groups, Daisy SHG and Ashoka SHG, transformed an everyday resource into an opportunity for collective growth.

Through PRASARI's participatory livelihood planning and continuous technical support, the women established a community-led vermicompost enterprise using locally available cow dung. From scientific production techniques and quality management to packaging, branding, and marketing, every step strengthened their confidence and entrepreneurial skills.

Their collective efforts resulted in the production and sale of 500 kg of vermicompost, generating ₹12,500 in revenue while creating an additional source of income beyond tea garden wages.

More than a successful enterprise, this initiative demonstrates how local resources, community institutions, and women's leadership can come together to build resilient and sustainable rural livelihoods.

Today, the success of Daisy SHG and Ashoka SHG is inspiring other Self-Help Groups to explore similar livelihood opportunities, paving the way for stronger community enterprises and economically empowered rural women.

Building Water Security, Together. 💧

In the rain-fed landscapes of Dumka, Jharkhand, water is more than a resource, it is the foundation of livelihoods, food security, and resilience. Yet, seasonal water scarcity continues to challenge rural and tribal communities.

Through community-led watershed interventions, PRASARI with local community, is working to restore this balance. The construction of water conservation structures is helping to reduce soil erosion, enhance groundwater recharge, and improve water availability for agriculture and household needs.

What makes this initiative truly meaningful is the active participation of the community. Women, youth, and farmers are contributing their labour, knowledge, and commitment, transforming watershed management into a collective movement for sustainable development.

Innovative solutions can make a significant difference in climate-vulnerable regions.

To address the challenge of raising quality seedlings during the rainy season, staircase (tiered) nurseries have been established inside polyhouses for off-season high-value vegetables. By combining scientific nursery practices with efficient use of space, farmers are now able to produce healthier seedlings while reducing disease risks and improving productivity.

Beyond improving cultivation, this initiative is also creating livelihood opportunities, with growing demand from farmers looking to adopt off-season vegetable production.

Through community participation, technical guidance, and local collaboration, sustainable agricultural practices continue to strengthen resilience and income opportunities for farming households.

A historic milestone…

Perhaps for the first time, the women’s group of Kashyone has been recognized for its ‘community-led water innovation and management’ efforts in the Darjeeling Himalayas, facilitated by PRASARI.

On 18 June 2026, the Kashyone Women’s Group won a national award for “Community-led Springshed Management”, presented by Hon’ble Dr. Raj Bhushan, Minister of State, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, at an event organized by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) . The group was selected as the winner through the Water Innovation Hackathon 2026 organized by IWMI and received an award along with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

Women Power/ Nari Shakti has turned the impossible into possible. The springs of Kashyone had started to dry up, but the women came forward as water warriors to save their springs—their Dharas. Over the past five years, the group has demonstrated how springs can be rejuvenated and sustainably managed—for water, for livelihoods, and for life. With resilience and determination, more than 150 didis fought against drying springs. Today, water has returned, transforming the village from water scarcity to a state of water surplus. With the revival of springs, life and dignity have also returned to the village. Bibi didi of Namchlekha said: ‘Dhara thulo bhayo, jeevon khusi ra sonmanko bhayo’

This journey, along with PRASARI’s community-driven spring management approach, is also being showcased on this global platform by the PRASARIan and women-group representatives in the presence of Hon’ble Minister Dr. Raj Bhushan.

This is truly a deserving national-level recognition, where both springs and women have received formal recognition. Thank you, IWMI, for identifying and selecting our women group as the winner across the country.

From the hills to the national stage—this is how communities and springs are finally being recognized.

For generations, natural springs have been the lifeline of villages across the Khasi Hills. But changing climatic conditions and declining groundwater recharge have increasingly threatened these vital water sources.

In response to community concerns, PRASARI partnered with local stakeholders across several villages in Eastern-West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills to restore and strengthen spring ecosystems through community-led springshed management.

By implementing interventions such as staggered contour trenches and contour bunding across 16.9 hectares, the initiative is expected to improve groundwater recharge and positively influence nearly 84 hectares of landscape.

What makes this effort truly inspiring is the participation of the communities themselves. More than 90% of the workforce involved were women, contributing their labour, knowledge, and commitment towards securing water for their villages and future generations.

This is more than spring restoration. It is about strengthening resilience, protecting natural resources, and building a more water-secure future together.

This World Environment Day, communities across the hills of West Bengal, the coastal landscapes of West Bengal, and the plateau region of Dumka came together with a shared commitment to protect and restore our environment. 🌱

From planting saplings and taking collective pledges to promoting sustainable natural resource management, community members reaffirmed that meaningful environmental action begins at the grassroots.

Despite the diversity of landscapes, the message remained the same: a greener future can only be built through collective responsibility and action.

Every sapling planted today is an investment in a healthier, more resilient tomorrow.

What if farmers could understand their soil health in just two minutes?

In Kalimpong, a community-led soil testing laboratory is making this possible through Bhu-Parikshak, an innovative soil testing device developed by Scanxt, IIT Kanpur.

Established by PRASARI in collaboration with Kalimpong Jeevika Kendra, the initiative is helping farmers access timely soil health information, make informed cultivation decisions, and improve productivity through scientific recommendations.

Beyond technology, this initiative is creating opportunities for women-led institutions to operate sustainable rural enterprises. Self-Help Group members are leading soil testing services, supporting farmers, and strengthening local agricultural systems.

By combining innovation, community ownership, and scientific knowledge, the initiative is contributing to more resilient farming practices and sustainable livelihoods in Kalimpong.

Kripa Hansda from Mathura Line, Aibheel Tea Garden, once worked as a daily wage tea garden worker with little voice in decisions affecting her life. Through PRASARI’s groundwater management and solar-powered irrigation initiative, she learned technical skills to manage water resources and support farming in the steep tea garden landscape. Alongside this, women in the community adopted climate regenerative practices such as biogas demonstration units, promoting sustainable resource utilisation and reducing dependency on traditional fuel sources.

“Earlier, we waited for others to solve our problems. Today, we understand our rights, speak directly with officers, and take decisions for our community ourselves,” says Kripa Hansda.

What began with a few women soon became a collective movement. Inspired by their success, other communities and tea garden workers started learning from them and replicating similar practices in their own villages. Women now regularly support and train one another on water management, sustainable farming, and accessing government schemes.

Today Kripa Hansda & her peers confidently participate in GPDP meetings, engage with tea garden management, sustainable farming, and access government schemes, creating a strong culture of collective action and shared leadership.
