DI pioneers unique initiative for Senior Citizens

21 August — World Senior Citizens’ Day.
And, as usual, DI was the trailblazer! The pioneer.
130 senior citizen club members (born before 1965) came together for a special evening of fun, interaction, learning and sharing over wine and whiskey. Organised by Team DI and curated by Derek O’Brien, his first time hosting at DI after many decades.
From the DI-scover icebreaker and the hilarious Cockroach Drawing Challenge to Zumba Gold, an impromptu talent contest, weekend holiday tips, and how to sleep better, the evening was packed with energy, entertainment and plenty of nostalgia.
We celebrated our senior members — with laughter, lively conversations and, most importantly, great company.

An Evening of Vinyl Exploration with Varun Desai

An immersive listening session curated by computer engineer, multi-disciplinary artist, and Kolkata Jazzfest director Varun Desai. Over a career spanning two decades at the intersection of technology, sound, and culture, Varun has amassed a vast and eclectic record collection. For this exclusive evening, he stepped away from the digital grid to celebrate the warmth, depth, and tactile intimacy of analog sound. The session will navigate a fluid, genre-defying trajectory through Varun’s personal vinyl archive. The meticulously sequenced auditory journey spanned classic jazz, seminal rock, global pop, and world music, before transitioning into deep cuts of electronica and hip-hop. More than a simple playback session, this event offered a communal space to appreciate the archival value of physical media and the unique acoustic properties of vinyl playback.

We had a great turnout for the 157th AGM held on 16th August 2026, especially considering a rainy day with Past Presidents Mr Derek O’Brien, Dr Somnath Ray and Mr Jayajit Biswas in attendance.

The proceedings commenced with observing silence in memory of our members who left us. The outgoing Council along with the Honorary Secretary and Assistant Secretary were thanked by the President Syed Hanan Ali for their valuable contribution towards the growth of the Institute.

Members present passed the audited accounts for the year 2025-26 and the day concluded with the unopposed election of the nine Council Members:

who after their first Council Meeting unanimously co-opted Mr Kisor Sen as the Honorary Secretary and Mrs Tanya E Robinson as the Assistant Secretary making the Council a strong team of eleven members.

Some highlights of the first Council Meeting were as follows:
Membership to be open under various categories and a dedicated team to look into infrastructure and development of the Institute.

The AGM concluded with a vote of thanks by the President.

This one hour workshop on styling, executive presence & makeup, was conducted by Muniza Khan (Corporate Trainer, Image Consultant, & Energy Healer)

✔ 2 makeup looks in under 10 min each

Participants left with a body-shape blueprint, a 5-piece capsule wardrobe formula, a rehearsed room-entry ritual for instant presence, and two muscle-memorized makeup looks (day and night) — all benchmarked by a before/after style-confidence scorecard that proves their own progress by the end of the hour.
