The first order of business for 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘑𝘶𝘨𝘯𝘶 supported by Population Matters was to hold a 𝘉𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘢𝘣𝘩𝘢 with adolescent children to create a space where they could speak openly about their lives, their rights and how to demand them.

The discussion brought up real issues from their daily lives including no running water for most of the day, potholed roads, dark roads and missing street lighting, unhygienic midday meals and a playground riddled with open drains.

The 𝘉𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘢𝘣𝘩𝘢 was all about encouraging them to raise their voices confidently and learning civic engagement. So the kids formed 2 small action groups to oversee changes demanded from the local panchayat body.

Anahat runs a sports based programme called 𝐒𝐩⚽𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 with adolescent girl children in Jharkhand, which is entering its 3rd year with a new partnership.

This programme uses sports as a tool to teach life skills to adolescent girls, through which they are introduced to their inalienable Rights and how to demand them.

We are looking for a committed female individual to lead the football-based adolescent development programme. The woman social worker should have an interest in and experience of Sports games and programmes, especially how to integrate larger life based skills training (leadership, team work, negotiation skills, asserting oneself) through the game.

Gender justice cannot only be something we talk about in communities. It must also be something we practice within our own teams.

Through the 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆 (𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗔) by The Gender Lab , our team members Namrata, Purvi and Deblina found a space to pause, reflect and question how gender, power and masculinity show up in everyday life.

Their learnings slowly became part of Anahat’s journey too. It helped us think deeper about leadership, care, listening, office culture and the way we hold space for each other.

We are still learning, still growing. helped become an organisation that recognises the absence of justice within and without. And what to do about it.

A isn't just handing out pads.

It means changing how we think, talk and build infrastructure. It means seeing menstrual health as a pillar of gender equality and ensuring that women and trans-men are not held back because of a natural bodily process.

It is a world that recognises women, girls, trans-boys and trans-men not as people to be uncomfortably accommodated but as absolute equals.

Introducing 𝐏𝐫𝐨जे𝐜𝐭 𝐉𝐮𝐠𝐧𝐮 ✨🧚🏽‍♀️

An initiative led by adolescent children in Alipurduar (in partnership with Population Matters ) to identify community challenges and discuss solutions with local government elders.

The project addresses systemic failures in North Bengal, where the closure of tea estates has left many families facing severe poverty and a lack of access to essential services. But most importantly, it emboldens adolescent children to demand accountability from the very people who promised to look after them.

Hi, I’m Dipika, a member of the accounts team. While that is my main work, I am involved with the programmes and projects as well. This time, I had the opportunity to lead something very special and completely different from my usual work. SVP India organised a 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 called “𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧” on 7𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 2026 at 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐞 (𝐀𝐉𝐂 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝, 𝐊𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚).

This programme was organised to celebrate womanhood and support women through encouragement, recognition and livelihood opportunities. It brought together inspiring stories, support for grassroots women entrepreneurs and a strong spirit of women coming together for change.

5 women were selected to take part in this process from Anahat. 𝐒𝐮𝐣𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐚, 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐧𝐢 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚, 𝐏𝐮𝐣𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐧, 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐚. As part of the selection, they had to show their stitching work. After the final selection, each of them received Rs.10,000 as support. This kind of programme is very meaningful because it recognises women’s skills and helps them build livelihood opportunities.

What makes this even more special is how they have already started using this support in practical ways. They bought sewing machines to generate more income for themselves. One of them shared that she now wants to teach other women how to sew, just like she once learned. Others have also started taking stitching orders from local families. These small steps are very important because support like this can slowly grow into steady livelihood opportunities and create confidence for the future.

From Anahat’s side, I coordinated with SVP India’s Team, completed the required process for all 5 women and also attended the prize distribution ceremony. It was a very proud and happy moment for me to see them recognised and supported.

I would like to congratulate all five women for this achievement. Your hard work and effort made this possible. A heartfelt thank you to SVP India and the organisers of 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 for creating such a meaningful platform for women.

So whose day was it, really?

Our honest attempt to correct where we faltered.

In reflecting on and comparing our 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐲 programmes in Alipurduar and Jharkhand, we've identified a glaring and shameful gap between symbolic observation and the actual dismantling of social hierarchies. And went on to conduct a necessary audit of our impact.

In Alipurduar, 61 girls from tea gardens led the discourse. They 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 and the "blame culture" within their own families. Their participation proved that safety is a systemic issue rather than a personal look out, highlighting the need for Anahat to engage more deeply with parents and ecosystems to create genuine environments of trust.

In Jharkhand, however, our event followed a traditional path led by male authority figures. While intended as an act of solidarity, this approach inadvertently placed girls in a passive role. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲. Reinforcing the very power structures Anahat attempts to challenge.

We're using this reflection to refine how we approach 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 and programmes on the ground. Moving forward, Anahat commits to ensuring that all programmes are led by the girls themselves rather than institutional proxies.

We must do better to ensure our work facilitates agency rather than just performing celebrations.
