Archee Roy, who has spent the week working on the mural at our building, is a Dalit-positioned Q***r visual artist, activist and muralist. She is a Fearless Collective Ambassador and one of the organizers of the Kolkata Pride Walk. She studied Textile Design, developing a deep engagement with materiality, craft traditions, and visual storytelling. Today her interdisciplinary practice spans textiles, batik, mixed-media installations, painting, sculpture, and public art. Deeply influenced by her family's history of migration and textile-making, she uses traditional craft practices as tools to explore themes of caste, gender, sexuality, memory, resilience, and belonging.
Her activism began in 2009 during the movement surrounding the decriminalization of Section 377 in India and continues to shape her practice. Through her work, she centers marginalized narratives, particularly those of Dalit, Q***r, and Trans communities.
Having participated in exhibitions and collaborative projects across q***r, feminist, and community-led spaces, as well as institutions such as Varta Trust, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata Centre for Creativity, and ICCR, we are grateful to have had her come on board as part of this project.
