Shreeja SHREEJA India empowers girls and young women through football in India.

We aspire to stop school dropouts, early marriages, girl trafficking and prevent violence against women through our sports for development programs.

My Shreeja Experience

“Ma’am, what do we do when we fail?” Jhumu, a class IX student, asked me this while I was discussing “Resilience” at Shreeja Center in Purandarpur yesterday.

“There may be days when you miss an easy goal, feel nervous, make wrong passes”, I continued.

“Yes, Ma’am…” Jhumu raised her hand and shared, “Last month, we lost a match in the tiebreaker. We cried. All of us were crying on the bus.”

“But what did you do after crying? After getting down from the bus, going home, taking a shower…?” I asked.

“Normal…” she replied with an innocent smile. “Had dinner and went to sleep.”

And there it was … the lesson we were trying to understand.

“Take a deep breath.
Try again.
Believe in yourself.
Ask for help when you need it.
And don’t let one difficult moment decide your whole journey,” I looked around at 25 pairs of curious eyes.

Resilience is not about never falling.
It’s about finding the courage to get back up and take another new step.

Some heroes never step onto the field, yet they make every goal possible.

Every day, after school, a group of girls from Sahabad village arrives both at our academic classes and also the field, with the same determination- to learn, to play, and to dream. Behind this journey is Gana Tudu, who, seven days a week, brings them together in his toto, stays and looks after them and after practice ensures their safety to bring them back into their homes. Ensuring they never have to choose between education and football.

At Shreeja, we believe real change is created when a community takes ownership of it's children's dreams. Gana Tudu is one such partner. His quiet commitment reminds us that when a community comes together, Shreeja can happen again and again...

Shreeja India’s Football Pathways Project at Nawadip, (Nadia) celebrates mental wellbeing along with physical fitness. Each player dribbles past through a set of cones, representing their real-life challenges, before shooting it into the net and shouting out their dreams for the future. This activity not only offers the girls a safe way to vent out their feelings but gives a bold voice to announce their ambitions clear and loud.

Shreeja Girls have embraced football as a career; reflecting a growing self-belief and a stronger sense of what's possible for them both on and off the field.

Seven years ago, three 15-year-old schoolgirls, Neha Mardi, Sumi Murmu, and Urmila Mardi joined Shreeja India’s sports-based learning program at Rajnagar in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Today, by sheer hard work and resilience, they have become proclaimed teachers delivering foundational knowledge to other children at Shreeja Rajnagar center. But their journey has not stopped there. They are now interning at Shreeja Head Office in Kolkata, learning how the Football & Beyond program is managed and run from the inside.

This isn't a lucky exception. It's the pipeline we've been building for years:

Marginalized girl → Player → Community Teacher → Peer Leader → Program Leader.

They're at the front of the line. 40 more alumni are already in the pipeline behind them. Girls who played for Shreeja football Team, did yeoman’s service during COVID relief work, and are now training to be part of Shreeja leadership.

That's what makes the Shreeja Football & Beyond program sustainable. We don’t thrust leadership from outside. We plant seeds, nurture local values, and give young girls the space to dream and lead in the same communities they belong to.

Congratulations, Neha, Sumi, and Urmila. We are all proud of you. Let’s work together to bring more girls out of the morasses of patriarchy into the beautiful world of equity.

Winning a trophy is fine, but the values we learn on the football field last a lifetime. It builds confidence that connects people, inspires empathy, and challenges stereotypes. Let’s support Grassroots Football for a better world.

Every match begins with a handshake. Rivals on the pitch compete with passion and leave with respect for one another. Let us carry this spirit of football into our communities, building a future where inclusion is stronger than division.

At Shreeja India, football is never just about the next match. It's about creating a future where every girl has the support to learn, play, and thrive. When children are reading, dreaming, and smiling, even the watchdog can finally take a break.
